I found two s10 ******s today, wrote down all the #'s off the cases, came home to ID them, then found out I need the #'s off a metal tag bolted on. I'm not so concerned with gear ratios etc. right now, but I am looking for a way to visually ID the difference between the s10 four and five speeds. Is there a quick way to visually tell the difference? I also wrote down what may be the VIN from the trucks they came from, would this shed some light?
5 speeds look like this: also you can just bang thru the gears, if there's 5 there well.... and I think that all of the T5 PNs/casting nums satrted with 1352-**x
A 4 speed won't have the little bump at the rear of the case directly below the shifter like the example shown. That is where the 5th gear is. jerry
almost 5th is on the other side, thats the rod for the 5th syncro / gear / reverse. but good call on an easy visual ID!
the tech page that I read said that ONLY the number on the removeable tag is good for ID. I'm curious though, if the numbers on the ****** correspond to the tag in ANY way. For example, these two numbers came off one of the ******s 13-51-097-091 and WG 13-51-120 this trans is supposed to be a 4 speed, just wondering if that second number is a different way of saying what the tag might say, 1351-120. It makes sense if all t5 tags are 1352-**x Anybody got a t5 real close they can go check the barcode tag #?
Not to hijack this thread but... what entails putting one of these behind a small block chevy? I just got a 5 speed for free. Thanks -stick
The link is a chart that shows the tag numbers on T-5's and the corresponding vehicle it came in. To my knowledge, S-10's never had manual 4 speeds. I believe all S-10 4 cyl/6cyl from 82 on came standard with the 5 spd. Don't rely on the vehicle year/make to ID the trans because all the mechanical speedo trans' are interchangable between years and the donar may have had the trans swapped out for another year. I think in 87(?) they went to electronic speedo, which requires expensive mods to hook up to your mechanical speedo, or you have to change out the tailshaft. http://www.pages.drexel.edu/~erb22/BorgWarnerT5.htm
I have run across three confirmed four speeds so far, and today, two that I am trying to cofirm with this post.

I'm currently searching for an '87-'92 Supra Turbo R-154 for my Duster. Mustang unit might do, too...For a poor man's Keisler.
I think in '87-'88 the electronic speedo only came with the optional digital gauges, but I haven't been able to confirm that 100%, but I do know not all had electronic speedos in those two years. I think '89 up are all electronic speedo.
