I read in one of the post that you can adapt a crab style dizzy to a 3 bolt cover. I've got a nice crab unit and I want to replace the divers helmet. Anyone know who makes this little jewel? If this is not available, what are my options?
Harmon and Collins made the orig. adaptor with the cam button. Dont know if anybody is re-popin them but they do turn up at the swaps now and again. It is not a hard piece to make maybe someone has one to borrow and copy? Good Luck!
Try this site, he used to have them ($30 I think) http://www.angelfire.com/co/flatheads/products.html
Thanks droptank, I when to that link, but with most angelfire deals, its screwy as hell. No contact info that I could find. The swapmeet link is for meets in 1999! Says go to www.flatheadsforever.net, but that takes you to yet another bullshit site. Help me contact this cat, I want to use this dizzy.
If you have a pre 46 engine with a 3-bolt cover you can't just change it to a 2 bolt. Your cam is longer in front than the 46-48 unit. If you put the 2 bolt cover and crab dizzy on your motor you will see that there is a problem. THE CAM. Cover fits just fine, but there is a gap between the cover and dizzy when you try to bolt it on. The cam has a "nose" poking into the cover. I suppose you can make an adapterflange between the cover and Dizzy. Otherwise you have to change your cam to a "59AB" style. Good luck
I thought the 2 bolt covers started in 42? Right or wrong. I f a 2 bolt 42-46 cover will work to install this dizzy, then I'm in the market for one.
The answer to this problem is just make a spacer. I have one somewhere in my stash (no, I need to keep it for "someday"). It's just a 1/4" or so (measure your gap for proper dimensions) aluminum spacer made to the same shape as the back of the distributor. Probably take all of a half hour with a jigsaw and a drill press. Just make sure your bolt holes are accurate to align the distributor correctly.
You may very well be right about this. I don't know for sure. Someone on here knows for sure. Bruce for instance. Think he is away for Hersey these days. Anyone else? Paul
Just to bring this up to date, Dennis Carpenter has the spacer needed to make this work for 20 bucks. You will need the 2 bolt cover, which he also has NOS in cosmoline no less for $25. 45 bucks later my problems were solved. Also he has the adapter to go the other way for 15 bucks.
I just noticed my pics are gone.....if I get a chance, I'll repost the pics... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=52205
I bought a 3 bolt to 2 bolt adapter from a nice old guy in Gary Tx. The crab dizzy supplies a hotter spark because you can use a modern coil. go to www.thepitstopgary.com he also is supposed to have a Pertronix conversion for the crab dizzy.
