I've been wondering for some time now about the history of Mallory and Vertex magnetos. I have a vague understanding of the history of Vertex. My understanding is that they were originally designed by Scintilla, a Swiss company, possibly originally for aircraft engines, sometime in the '30s. It was then adapted to a wide variety of engines by Hunt, if I am correct. My understanding of Mallory magneto history is even more vague, but from what I can determine, the Mini-mag was the first, sometime in the early '60s perhaps, and on all of them I've seen the tag says "generating component made by Scintilla". The Super mag was next, apparently some time in the mid '60s. I don't know anything beyond that. When did the Super Mag II come out? And please expand upon and/or correct anything I've said so far.
Not much to add here, but Ronco licensed the Vertex design in the 1960s - I have a Ronco for a Chevy with 90* angle drive....
The December 1959 Hot Rod magazine has a complete history of the Vertex magneto. It won't do you much good cause you don't have a copy. If you have a few questions I will look it up and answer you. Ago
I'll have to dig through my early nineties Rod&Custom stash. Pat Ganahl did a story on the whole history of the Vertex mag. It origins go back a bit farther than you are thinking though. I believe the basic design is of the late teens if I remember correctly.
