  2. Post an ad in the wanted section for backing plates and maybe do a search for backing plates in the classifieds. Check with your local wrecking yard.

There are other solutions for what you want to do but they would entail some fabricating and machining.

I have run into this problem before and the backing plates are really hard to find. No one sells them new for the small bearing housing and wide shoes. The '57-'59 station wagons were the best source but are scarce. It will cost a few bucks but Speedway and others sell a complete rear drum rebuild kit that will convert your housing, the issue is the backing plate offset for the 11" shoes.

I have built a lot of cars and to tell the truth there isn't a noticeable difference between 10 1/2" and 11" brake performance.

Check your brake offset. Likely your issue is the mismatch between a narrow shoe axle/brake offset and later wide shoe and corresponding offset.

Not to intrude on his quest but is there a definitive listing of what fits what backing plate and drum wise on the Ford nine inch rears. I've got one that is big bearing F-100 or F-150 with no drums or backing plates.

Cobra Automotive Specialties has backing plates used on the Shelby's that had wider shoes. Not sure if they will work for you but they are available.
