I am currently in the parts collection stage of my 32 5 window Chevrolet build. The last of the major components I need to track down is the engine. For the longest time I was wanting to put a Hemi ( I have a 331 l/b ) but for the last year or so I can get the Jimmy six out of my head for this build. I have chased down a few leads on, "the old guy with a GMC" from coworkers and friends. Most of the have turned out to be 250 era chevy sixes.. (one 292 but to new for what Im wanting) and even one dodge slant six. It really shouldn't be that hard to find one, in Alaska they are in a lot of them put in the military CCKW 6x6 (which are all over the place here) but people want to sell the whole rig and Im not buying one for just the engine. Here's the delima. There's a 54 248 complete with a hydramatic and steering column shifter for 500$ on C/L. "running when taken out for street rod truck project" Its gets recycled on c/l for almost a year now... I bet he'd bite on any offer. so I guess here are my *ifs*... one if i get it and its a runner will a 302/270 bolt in once I find a runner... and lets be honest the bigger one would get a rebuild and hopped up. Do all the aftermarket intakes and split exhaust bolt on both the bigger ones? are the same things needed to bolt up a T5? (same flywheels and so on) And ... I LIVE IN ALASKA SHIPING A MOTOR HERE $$$$$$$ squared...
When I was a kid I sold papers in front of the post office. Across the street was a drug store and the soda jerk had a 32 Chevy 5 window with a 302 in to. Red body with black fenders and chrome hood doors. How I loved that car. Never looked at a 248, but I think they are pretty much the same as a 270/302. Look out for a 6 bolt crank flange. Ports are smaller so manifolds and exhaust made for a 248 would be choking a 302. I had a 270 in my 32 Ford and liked it just fine. Can you find a 270?
My father-in-law replaced the 228 in his '46 GMC with a built 270. It bolted right in. The bigger engine really woke up the old jimmy.
Posted an Add on the C/L... Reads As follows. <SECTION id=postingbody>I am looking for a GMC 302, Will settle for a 270, inline six motor. These came in 50's GMC Trucks and CCVW 6x6's... What I am NOT looking for... 1. a 302 Ford... 2. an inline six Chevy (the GMC's ARE different and Not at all the Same..) 3. a DZ302 Chevy V8... (i doubt there are any REAL DZ302's up here anyways) 4. A whole truck with a 302 in it unless you sell it to me at the value of a 302... Thank you ... We'll see if I get any bites..
Like you Tman... I want to build a 302 belly tank soooo bad. (I'm 6'6" and 330 ftlb of awesome!) I am no to sure I'll fit.
My Dad used to race a 270 in a 46 Pontiac roundyround dirt car , the abundance of Mains (bearings ) made it bulletproof , he ran it 25 minutes @over 3600 many times , and drove a twisty 2-lane blacktop, between Kalispell and Whitefish Montana , averaging 103 MPH, Quite an achievement in 1953
Check out inliners.org there is a lot of good info on GM 6 Cylinders. If nothing else it is a good read and it may inspire you to go 302 Jimmy............. Jeff
There's an old gmc in anchorage in someone's yard off omalley. I know someone who bought the ****** out of it. Not sure if the motor is still there.
A 261 GMC six might be easier to find, they were used from 1954 to whenever they changed to a V6 (55 - 62 in Canadian Pontiac cars). They are a great engine and many were used in Chev hot rods and race cars. They fit easily into older Chevs.
