I'm currently restoring a 35 Ford 2dr slantback. I have the luggage rack that mounts to the rear bumper braces and folds against the spare tire. Were these painted to match the car or were all painted black?
My instinct is to tell you that since this is a hot rod forum, paint it any color you want !! But being a nice guy that I am, I believe those trunks were after market and not supplied by the OEM, unless sold as an accessory. I can't recall ever seeing one any other color than black on a stocker. Maybe the ritzier cars (Dusenburgs, Packards, etc.)had trunks painted to match, but during the depression & years following, subdued colors were the style.
You have picked a great car to restore! This is quoted information from the 1935 - 36 Ford Book published by and available from the Early Ford V-8 Club of America. This is a great book to own if you are working on a '35 or '36 Ford. "Due to limited luggage space in many '35 Fords, an accessory luggage/trunk rack was made available in the 1935 model year. The basic design remained unchanged during the 1935 and 1936 model years. This luggage rack apparently was a popular accessory and many factory letters indicate that it was available in either basic black, or body color, or it could be painted to match the accessory strip and accent wheel colors".
Davis, you probably would be better off asking these kinds of questions on the Fordbarn. Many of us there are working on '35 Fords. Some of us are restoring to original while others are not. I am building one of my '35 tudor sedans into a traditional hot rod....but...don't tell anybody LOL.
