Seems I remember a magazine tech article in one of the little page books years ago of maybe Barris or someone doing that. Stu
200 MPH Art. Recyled old salt discs I sell. Doing a bunch for KKOA Salina in 2 weeks. My good friend and customer 214gearjammer left me his front wheel covers for his shoebox to pinstripe in 360 degree old school design. 'Rolling Art' for sure. Everything comes full circle.
I have a copy of the aforementioned Barris book - one of a series of Spotlite Books that PPC/Hot Rod Magazine did back in the late '50's-early 60's. Here are a couple of trips back in time, scanned from that copy, to show ya how it was really done!
I'm sure all these images have been posted before on here but anyhow... here's the mag it's in. Lots of cool stuff in there.
Painting designs on hub caps has been around for a long time. I remember a local guy here in town back in the 60's that had a set of moon disc on the front of his 50 Ford and had them mounted to floaters,,basically the wheel turned but the hub cap stayed basically in place. He had the old "Hot Stuff" devil painted on them,,,it was cool to watch him drive by and the image just floated,,definitely a custom car look. HRP
I remember Max Miller's smoothed '54 Merc. had some Barris did for him , looked like something from Barnum and Bailey ! Hence the name "Cicus Wagon " was bestowed . I recall he had clearance lights installed under the wells too ---long before the neon craze.
Car Craft did an article on this in the late 50's or early 60's by Dean Jefferies. I have a copy somewhere if anyone would like to see it I could scan and post. Bill
There was also one in one of the little books in the late 50's with Andy Southard doing the story and the paint.I'll have to ask him about it the next time I speak to him.
