A while back i asked for advice on a oil leak on my 327. I thought it was a rear main seal. After replacing it a few times i borrowed a smoke machine. With the flywheel off the moroso deep pan lip was visible. It turned out to be the contour of the pan. Some gentle m***aging later the leak is gone. A friend told me he had a similiar leak but in the front. Just thought i would p*** this on in the hope it helps some one else.
Even with a brand new pan it is a good idea to lay a straight edge across the sealing surface and make sure it is flat. A few minutes with a hammer and dolly will save a lot of grief.
Well, it's a machine that produces................smoke. Seriously, I think he is refering to a smoke generator you would use for special effects such as for Haloween decorations.
I think thay came up with the smoke machine to fine va***e leaks on the newer cars to try and fix them pesky evap codes.
I've seen smoke machines used to track down vacuum leaks on engines. If there's a leak, the smoke will pour out.
Harmless white smoke is pumped into a closed system under a small pressure. The smoke exits through leak paths. They are a great luxury diagnostic tool. Aaron Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
I ***ume you are saying it was leaking on the rounded contour at the rear main cap?Man, that could have taken forever to find through conventional means.
I watched a show on HP TV that had a engine builder from? that would test fit the pan and then sand down the end seal to fit. I guess if you use studs for the pan at the ends it would show the misalignment of the end seals.
. X2 I used one at a shop I used to work at.Nice to have around.we would fill it with Baby oil and it heats the baby oil up to make the smoke!
A smoke tester is a machine designed to find leaks as small as .020 of an inch in OBD II EVAP systems and has become very helpful in finding vacuum leaks and in the case of OP an oil leak he was having trouble fixing. It uses nitrogen and a special fluid that produces "smoke" that can be seen with a high intensity light.
Yes the ones that use nitrogen are rated for newer cars the one that you hook up to the air comp are not but work for lots of things. **** $$$
There are also smoke Pencils, we use the for testing laminar air flow hoods. Great way to determine air flow paths. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
the way it works is a hose goes into the dip stick thats where the smoke is pumped into the engine. the breathers must be plugged. as the pressure builds in the crank case it wants to exit the engine. the path it takes to get out is the area of the leak. they can also be used to find a water leak on a interior. door or window etc. or pesky wind noise. i learned about this through my son when he had auto shop cl***. glad i could help out.
I set my air regulator to 5psi and pressurize the crank case with shop air . Then Use some soapy water in a spray bottle to find any leaks. There nothing wrong with a smoke machine but my garage is only so big.
