I have a th350 in a 69 chev pickup. My question is: between reverse and park there is a huge amount of play or space. So when it is hooked up to the b+m shifter cable, it creates too much travel. All the other gears click where they should when I turn the little lever on the ******. When I go to turn it to park it takes a little more force and four times the amount of travel. I have compared to some other junk th350 s that I have and they feel normal. The ****** works fine otherwise but it would be nice to hook up the floor shifter ha ha has anyone encountered this same problem? Thanks fellow hambers
If it has an original length shift lever, drop the pan and take a look. There is an "S" hook that attaches to the internal lever "rooster comb" to the selector "spool" valve. If when installing the lever the nut is over tightened without supporting the lever, the " s" hook will stretch out and change the range location. Ask me how I learned that! Forgot to add: there is always more travel between park and reverse, but should not be excessive. Its by design, when you see the rooster comb (selector with Teeth are the detents or clicks that you feel) you will notice a larger gap between park and reverse.
The "gap" is to allow full insertion of the park rod against the park pawl. This park rod has a slight bend to it, if is bent more or straightened out it will cause the long "delay" you have encountered. willys1 ^^^^^yes the most likely cause, ask me how I know...... by fixing other peoples screw ups.....
Just as you said. The nut was loose. I was surprised that there is no lock washer to prevent this from happening? Shifts great now. Thanks again
