heres some drawings of a home made shrinker / stretcher, for the jaws you use sections of flat files cut to fit and welded on, the guy i got these from has aparently used them lots and says the welding of the files dosent seem to effect them. i get my milling machine in the next month and will be using these plans myself.
Budd- I don't know if you can pull this off, but what are the chances you could make a set with a deeper bite? here's why I ask. if you could make a set with -say- a 6 inch deep "throat" (Hah! deep throat...I kill me!) they would be invaluable to those of us who do damage repair. imagine being able to "take a bite" out of a badly stretched fender opening. Or remove a "tin can" from a hood by shrinking. one "bite" in the right spot and it's a done deal. and about 1000 times easier and more reliable than heat shrinking. canyoudigit?
Hope permission was given to put these on a public forum. If they were my drawing I spent time drawing,,,,,, well, hope he said it's ok.
I just got the Eastwood shrinker/stretcher; I have yet to use it, but I was thinking it would be nice if they had a deeper throat. May need to make the body out of thicker material to accomodate a modification of this type.
i have seen plans for a deep throat shrinker, but i dont remember where, they were much the same as these plans just deeper, maybe if you go to this link you can see the dims a little easyier. http://www.metalmeet.com/photopost/showgallery.php?cat=3784
A deep throat shrinker/stretcher build is shown in the thread below. http://www.metalmeet.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9114 Joe
Hey, In the early days of the Metalshapers.org site, the premier online metalshaping site, "The Swedes" I boleave, did a major post on building a deep throated shrinker. I wanna say that it used Lancast- er jaws. Sorry I can't help on a link, cuz I'm retarded like that, but a search of the site archives "may" yield results. A deep throat on a shrinker isn't only usefull for collision repair, but a major plus for panel development when ya get into deeper water and start building your own body panels. Kanadian Kustom Kar God Jim Bailey, also posted a great example of a stand, to hold your shrinker once ya build it. Check Jim's file on the metalshapers site. S****ey Devils C.C.
has any of you build one after these blueprints and is there any problem if i would want to make it deeper so it can reach more into the panel i am working on .
Budd, many thanks for those plans!!! We have recently got details milled using this plans and have a question What should we install between jaws? We suppose some spring i.e. from pen? How should we install jaws - I mean i.e. in shrinker dies - there are 2 jaws- one small and one big - so how should upper and lower dies be oriented between each other- same jaw under same or small under big? May be you have some photos of complete jaws / dies? It will be very helpful 10x in advance, Dima
