Just got it here on Tuesday. It's a real steel 40 coupe. Steel doors but gl*** nose, rear fenders and decklid. Pretty typical for an old race car. Has a blown BBC. Somebody attempted to "Pro Street" the poor thing and narrowed the Olds rear and tubbed it. I'm almost embarr***ed to show the back half. When I'm done it will have a sky high g***er stance and the tubs will be gone. I will run a 15x10 in the back that will protrude just past the rear fenders. It needs lots of work and it will be on the back burner until I finish my other project. I've always wanted a Willys coupe but never thought I would have the opportunity. This car came from Dallas and this history is sketchy. Was raced at Dragway 42 in the 70's and then parked. Anyways I'm in debt again........but money is overrated and Willys coupes are'nt
Congratulations...... on getting ' your Holy Grail ' car..... I love to see folks get the car they always wanted....When I got my 32 Roadster....I had to go in debt......I had house payments, El Camino payments, new shop payments......buying 100 acres of investment property payments ...and then I drug home the Roadster... Man was I broke.... I consolidated all the smaller payments into 1 back breaking payment...... But I had a real 32 Roadster.....
I have always love those cars ever since I was a teenager back during the g***er wars. I know of a fellow who has a whole garage of these cars. None of them streetrodded but mostly preserved from the day. One is totally unpainted steel with a big block hemi I've seen, with a signature in the trunk which says. "Steel is Real" Don Garlits Dragway 42 was a very popular raceway here in Ohio back in the 60's and 70's that had alot of big names. I wonder if it was raced here? Your a very lucky guy! the utimate g***er !
My dream car was a 32 Ford Roadster. Mine is gl***, been in a fire when shipped total by ins and now back on the road. But its mine and I love it.
Nice car, I've always thought the willy's were the best looking g***ers out there. Here's a shot of one at the Chrysler musem
BEAU tifful!!! So who isn`t in debt? Hell, thats just part of life. The good part is that you can go to your garage and feel better about being that way!
Is there some unwritten law that g***er willys coupes must be that shade or similar of blue??? *****in car.
That car is sweet. I think It was at Goodguys a couple weeks ago in Fort Worth Texas. Anyhow congrats
Beautiful car. My Dad had a 40 Willys when I was younger, all steel, only the frame and body. He had to get rid of it. I have ALWAYS loved those cars.
WOW, that is beautiful. I've never seen it here either. But I did see this little cream puff. Brought a tear to my eye...
4tford, the Willys you posted was built by a fellow here in the Saginaw Valley. Dan Lookwood did the deed and drove it all the way to the west coast to compete in the first Ego Rama and on the way back took a side trip up into Wisconcin. over 5,000 miles and only broke a alternator mount bolt. IMO a testimoney to the quality of the build. Not many 671 blown 392 Hemis have been put through those paces WO spending some trailer time. Frank
That was built by Dan Lockwood...I had the honor of body and paint on it....blown 392 and the maiden voyage out in the country was Un-frickin-real!!!!!....I want one TOO!!!
Thanks for all the compliments! Makes me feel better. It was a tough decision but these things are pretty hard to find and not a bad investment. If I dont get carried away, it should always be worth more than I have in it. Kinda like having another 401K. I had to take out an equity loan to buy it. Well these thoughts have helped me sleep better... I have already talked with a bunch of Willys guys around the country and these guys are very helpful. But parts are tough to find and EXPENSIVE. As an example, an original decklid will bring almost 4K and a set of doors 7K!! As most know, the Willys were popular g***ers because of their light weight and short wheel base. In the early 60's most were all steel, but by 65-66, most had steel sheels and the rest was fibergl*** for weight savings. For that reason I will leave the body as it is. When I'm done, I would like it to look like a mid-late 60's g***er, minus the Hemi......that will take another equity loan Anybody think the color kinda looks like the Stone Woods and Cook Swindler car? Car looks great from 20 ft but my work is cutout for me. Here is the UGLY!
