Whats your favorite non metallic maroon color that is darker than the forty ford maroon but would still look good on a traditional old ford ? Did Lincoln or maybe the other luxury models have a deep maroon ? Porsche/Volkswagen ?
The color chips on the TPI and other websites are very deceptive as to what the color really looks like on a car in my experience. Darkening, with black toner tends to lock you into one brand and formula that only works for the exact type of paint used, and the way products are evolving, you will be back to the camera gun. Can I darken by using black primer underneath ?
    Thanks for your ideas.

  2. Have a look at some commercial colors. The ones used on 50's,60's and 70's trucks

Mack,White,KW,Ford,GM,Peterbilt,Autocar,Diamond Reo all have nice shades of deep rich solid colors.
Tip:-sometimes maroon's are referred to as 'dark red'

I had an 1984 olds that was a beautiful maroon. It looked very bright, almost red in the daytime, but at dusk it was a very deep maroon...

unless the maroon is transparant the black primer will not darken it. Just might make it easier to cover.

I like the early '80s Volvo maroon. I may be biased as we had one when I was a teen.

I picked up a box of Christmas ornaments a few years ago just because I like the shade of maroon they were. Look around the right shade might be right under your nose and paint shops can match just about anything these days. If you ever make to the peoria part of the valley i'll give you one of the ornaments

This is a maroon Ford used in late 60's thru 70's. I have the code but would have to look for it. I will if it suits your eyes.

This maroon is a base color for a mid 2000 Infinity tricoat . We converted the formula to be a clearcoat . It actually is quite an interesting color . It had a slight purple cast to the maroon yet would look black or chocolate brown in different outdoor lighting .

I recall "Vintage Burgundy" on the 65 Mustang was a nice color.
