My 28 Tudor is registered in Washington and has a 6 figure vin # on the ***le. Wasn't the vin # on a Model A on the engine? I want to register it here in Arizona but don't know where to find the vin #. Any ideas.

should be under the body on the left frame rail right under the cowel or just behind where the cowel bolts to the frame..
it should also be on the engine ..if it is the original engine.

Yep, it may be eroded away and requiring freshening up if visable at all on frame rail, in Minnesota they will not go by engine number for inspection if needed due to the fact that engines/******s get changed.

Your six-digit ID number is an indication of a 1928 Model A. Last number for '28 somewhere around *A210122* and should be stamped on the engine below the head on the driver's side. Once in a while, the 'A' in the ID number is omitted. (And, because some folks are very precise, it's not a "VIN" ... not enough alphanumerics.)

Like they guys said, originally a matching number was stamped on the top of the frame UNDER the cowl ... no way to see it unless the whole body is unbolted and raised.

ANY number used to identify and register a vehicle is a VIN(Vehicle Identification Number).

Semantics, they're killing me with semantics.

My vin # is on the engine block its a Canadian car. There was none to be found on the frame. The experts up here all told me that the engine #is the way that Henry did it. John

Mine has a Chevy II 4 banger in it and full fendered. Really don't want to take the body off to find the vin# so probably leave the Washington year of manufacture plate on her. Also has a 7 to start the numbers. I got the car from Washington and it was built in Nebraska but Wash doesn't require inspection any more I'm told so the number was used from the Nebraska registration.

They are using a 6 digit number that starts with 7 but I have no idea where they got it. I can't insure it here with the Wash plates so thought I would change to Arizona. Maybe have to insure it separtate from my car and motorhome as I just changed insurance companys and that takes effect on the 26th of Nov

Actually the number stamped on the engine was considered to be a SERIAL NUMBER - Vin #'s didn't exist back then.

ALL ENGINES for Ford Model "A's" were ***igned a SERIAL NUMBER at the time the engine was built.
ALL ENGINES - until the later part of the '30's - were ***embled in the Rouge engine plant and shipped in "batches" to the various final ***embly plants around the world.
(this explains why broken SERIAL NUMBER sequences would show up in Canada)

At the time the engine was lowered into the ch***is; the serial number of the engine was stamped on the frame.
(the guy - no women on the ***embly lines yet - who stamped the number on the frame had 92 SECONDS!! ) (from Ford Information Archives)
Which explains why the numbers were often crooked and out of line.

Now ... here is where fact and supposition get mixed together.
The U.S. serial numbers were USUALLY stamped on the TOP of the LEFT side FRAME RAIL, USUALLY under the cowl foot.

From there, serial numbers have been found IN FRONT of the cowl foot, TOP, LEFT side of frame rail. (Canada, Great Britain and sometimes Australia)

Great Britain and Australia "A" serial numbers would sometimes be stamped on the RIGHT side TOP of frame rail.

And last but not least; some frames didn't get a serial number stamped on it AT ALL!!

Thanks diggerdave. Very good info and what I was always told but you never know until you work on your own. I have had a lot of A frames but never looked for a vin# as it wasn't important at the time.

You might get a small br*** tag and stamp your no.'s on it and rivet it to the frame rail right ahead of the body. I have seen this done on Model A's because the numbers are under the body normally. Depends on how sticky your DMV is.

In Canada, the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) were / are *** responsible for ***igning VIN's to any OLDER vehicle - we're mainly discussing '28 to '31 Ford Model "A's" here - that didn't have an EXISTING VIN# OR a Serial number VISIBLE ANYWHERE on the frame.
(and this was ***uming an original "A" engine was no longer in place)

Because it wasn't unusual to have had an "A" engine replaced somewhere along the way - re-built - and the SERIAL # on the ENGINE no longer MATCHED the SERIAL # on the FRAME; the RCMP would consider the frame SERIAL# to be the number used on the registration papers.

IF IT STILL EXISTED! OR could be FOUND!!

    One exception to this would be if;
YOU could produce original REGISTRATION and OWNERSHIP papers BEARING a SERIAL #.
Many people BUY "***LES" that have the SERIAL # from another "A."
(needs to be the same year and model as your own)

A word to the wise; I sold the engine from my "A" to a friend, and HE used the engine Serial # to register HIS "A!"
So I had to buy another "***LE" to register mine! So have a ***le search done to make sure the serial # you plan to use; ISN'T already in USE!!

Given that many hot rodders CHANGED the frame under "A's" - or welded over top of, or accidentally destroyed the frame SERIAL #; then the RCMP would issue a 17 character VIN #.

In CANADA the RCMP would ***ign a NEW 17 character VIN# and
THEY WOULD PRODUCE THE VIN # TAG AND FASTEN it in place.
The special rivets they use show ANY tampering.

*** At the moment, there are changes being proposed - Federal Legislation - that would NO LONGER use the RCMP for this task. So the above COULD CHANGE!!
For the moment I don't have any up to date information as to WHO will be doing this in the future. (issuing 17 character VIN's)

I don't think you need an inspection on the car anymore in AZ. I believe they recently changed that. I bought a car from out of state, and was able to transfer ***le to my name without any inspection. In the past they made me take that car in for a level 1, at least.

Technically, no. A VIN will tell you the country of origin, the manufacturer, the model year, the plant it was built in, platform and body style and more. A serial number-- not so much. All VIN are, in part, serial numbers, but not all serial numbers are VIN.

All Ford USA engines were built and numbered at the Rouge plant, then shipped off to around 30 USA and overseas plants (in areas supplied by Ford USA)...so there is a variable time between engine date and when the thing hit a ch***is and the number was copied onto the frame. GB Made Model A engines on its own at some point, but used blocks of numbers from the USA series. A USA Model A could have any number from 1 (some in the 20's have survived) to nearly 5,000,000. Model B's were arbitrarily started at 5,000,000.
Canadian A's, which were also the A's sold in the Antipodes, much of Africa, India, etc. had their own entirely different numbering system because they made their own engines.
These were numbered in fairly short groups of numbers with prefixes that were changed for each group...
I believe that Canadian ch***is were not numbered except for the actual number on engine, so plenty of potential trouble there 80 years on...

I have a Frame I'm told is a 29. It has a Star stamp, what appears to be a Hyphen, 7 numbers, and another star. Any clue as to year?

My 28 Tudor doesn't have a frame stamp on it, still no problem regestering in Washington.
