Ok, I'll look into that. I tried to find a price on the nada site but it didn't have values for non running cars in need of restoration.

Don't get discouraged about getting the Plymouth, if you are successful you'll have the only one at any show you go to. I showed my '38 Plymouth pickup for 12 years before I saw another one. It's a good thing to have something that's different. It took me nearly 10 years to get mine.

Thanks, I know its a diamond in the rough... I'm going to stop once in a while and like people said, earn his trust. Its a small town and I'm sure if he asks around about me he will hear I'm a hard working kid. He knows my mom from going to the P.O. and seeing her around town so he kind of knows me. I would be bummed if I cant find a way to get it but it is what it is. I can say I tried. We will see in the following months what happens!

I like the idea about making magnetized signs for the doors. If I could take a picture of the doors and match that for the back round that would look slick. I might even say that I would park it at his business on the weekends in the summer when there are a lot of city people out, would be good since I live and work right down the road.

It's always easier and cheaper to buy something from someone who wants to sell. There are lots of old trucks around. Look in Kijiji or Cragslist, something will come along. Or keep your eyes peeled for another old truck. Once you get in the habit of looking and asking you will find more deals than you know what to do with.

One thing you might try, the gentleman already knows you want his truck so stop in and ask him if he would mind if you took some pictures of it so you can do some research on it. Tell him again how long you've admired it and that you are going to try to find another one. Then write your name, address and phone number on a piece of paper and ask him to put it into the glove box and if he ever decides to sell it ask him if he would give you a call so you could have first shot at it. Without being a pest stop in once in a while so he knows you are still interested. It wouldn't hurt to also let his wife know you are interested. I did basically this same thing a few years ago. I worked at an auto parts store and a customer stopped in driving a nice old VW Rabbit pickup. After waiting on him I asked him if I could check out his truck. I asked him if he was interested in selling it. At the time he wasn't selling. The next time he stopped in I had to take another look at his truck and this time I gave him my business card and asked him to put it in the glove box. Well, two years later he called me and said he was ready to sell and I bought it at a real good price.

Whoa. Stop right there. The owner DOES NOT WANT TO SELL IT. He's not interested, not motivated, and he's not going to sell it to you. You've got yourself all jazzed about this truck that is unavailable. Take a step back, cool down, start shopping. There are LOTS of available projects out there who belong to people who WANT to sell them. Further down on the HAMB you'll find cl***ifieds with hundreds of cooler, better, and AVAILABLE old car projects to build. Beyond that, Craigs Llist and eBay are filled with projects. There are likely car guys in your area who know somebody who knows somebody who HAS to sell a project car. Most of them much more desirable than this truck.

    Slow down.

Looks like he really wants the truck for advertising purposes, they do draw attention. So see if he would take a trade for a different truck. You might be able to get another one cheaper then trade with cash. He still has the attention getter and you get the truck you really want. win-win

These guides are so far removed from reality that they are not worth the paper they are written on. My advice to catchthis is go find a truck that IS for sale - not one that clearly is not. Scour CL, Hemmings, Old Car Trader, evilBay, Hamb cl***ifieds. If it's a '30s/40s truck you want I have found that International Harvester has some pretty cool ones that are not usually badly priced as they are a low demand item. Good luck with the hunt and remember there are plenty of other fish in the sea....

If you gotta have a Plymouth PU, beat the bushes to find others. You should connect with other owners for info anyway, develop those relationships now. You may find another one that IS for sale not too far away.

At your age, you should have enough time to do many projects.
If that one is THE truck for you and the one that you will keep forever, here is another suggestion...
Buy something else old and in need of repair. Fix it up with an eye toward learning, developing skills and being able to at least break even on a sale.
Show this guy your project and progress. By the time the first one is done and for sale, he will see that you are serious and have the skills. He may even want to buy it for the front of his shop. Sell the first project and then you will have the funds to buy this one and do some of the work.
Everyone learns with each project, and the first one is usually the roughest.

Hey guys, I havnt stopped back in yet to talk about the truck again because I dont want him to feel pressured, although I do want him to know I am serious. I do keep an eye on craigslist but almost all of the trucks I find are too far away or out of my price range. I am currently restoring a 25' bertram, converting it from an express boat to a center console diesel. All the work on the boat is being done by me with money I make at work, not my parents money. I work in a shop where we build custom cabinets and boats so a lot of what I am doing comes easy to me. I also hang out with my buddy on the weekends who works as a mechanic at a local auto shop. I can defiantly find my way around a shop, we have a three car garage begging for a project and plenty of tools from my dad when he used to race modifieds. I'm going to stop back in soon to talk to him again. I like the idea of finding another truck to trade, there are plenty of 50's chevys near me f/s cheap so its a possibility. I was actually thinking of showing him pictures of what I work on but we'll see. Thanks for the advice everyone!

I would not pay more than 2k for it as it needs a lot. Does it run?
