has anyone ever used 46 ford rear wishbones to split for an open drive rear axle...i'm planning to make brackets and put them on a 49 truck rear but they seem like they might be a little thin..1/8" or so...

Using the factory forged end that bolts to the rear housing out by the brake drums?

    I wouldn't even consider it.

You could use them to make lower arms for a 4 link or 3 link to give an early look by adding bushing sleeves to the back end in place of the forged ends...

I've used them but kept them as close to the center as possible. Wouls be best to use with a torque arm or link. There was a post a while back about using a torque link with rear wishbones.

What about cutting a slit down the center and welding in a piece of 11 gage to stiffen them up? One thing I've considered, but haven't gotten around to trying, is cutting the tubes off the ends, machining some replacements from solid bar, and welding those on.

The axle ends are very small for the job of holding the complete rear axle. They are not setup like the 36ish bones at all.

I am currently running 46 front wishbones on the rear of my modified. I cut the cast end off at the weld. I used a grinder and cut-off wheel and cut a 3/8" slot about 6" long in the top and bottom on the wishbone. I then made a bracket from 3/8" steel and inserted it into the wishbone. The bracket was approx. 12" long and was tapered to go past the sweep in the wishbone. All was welded up tight and then attached to brackets near the brakedrum. The brackets were made so that the top 1/2 is welded to the rear. The bottom half is on the wishbone. When installed the axle tube is completely incased. It has held up to some pretty good launches to date. I'm running a smallblock chev. and 8 3/4 Mopar rear. The front of the bones are attached via tapered bungs and tie rod ends to the outside of the frame. Sam
