I've got an early 80s 305 SBC, 621 bellhousing, 168 tooth flywheel. the starter that was previously on the car when the TH350 was in it doesn't fit. do I need one of the iron nose starters or have I gone too far afield by accident for any sort of OEM solution and I need a mini starter? the starter that was on there took 2 different length bolts and the pattern was straight (parallel to the flexplate/flywheel). If I get an iron one do I need to get new nose bolts to make it work as well? Thanks,
I just replaced the engine in my 53 f100 from 82 305 w/turbo 400,to 1969 350 w/same trans,i thought I might have an issue with the starter, bolt pattern diagonal, both bolts same lenth, but no issues I think the starter was from the 79 nova I used for the front clip, hope that helps
i think you need the one with stagerd pattern and both bolts should be the same. thats what fits with 168 tooth flywheel.
thanks for the info, got the right starter! your help is much appreciated. after 4 months on jackstands picking away at the auto to 4speed swap in my driveway, the starter was the last thing to do at the end of a long list, I got the starter from NAPA, asked for 78 camaro z28 starter for a manual car and got the right thing (even got the high-torque version). thanks again.
