I have a car that's been sitting for about a year, and I finally got enough $$ to buy a motor to swap in. The problem is, I didn't plan on waiting this long to do it, so it's got about 1/2 a tank of gas that's been sitting the whole time. What to do? How do you get rid of gas? Should I try to run it anyway? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I've had gas sit for a year and be fine, and I've had gas sit for 6mo. and gum up my carb. If you don't feel like ****ing around with dirty gas, drain it out and run your lawnmower on it.

What do I do with it once I've drained it? Is it Haz-Mat? How do you dispose of it??

why not put a couple inline filters on it and run the old gas? I ran the **** that sat in my truck for 20+ years:D the exhaust smelled putrid it ran pretty rough and it did plug up 2 filters  actually the chunks and **** in the gas tank did more to plug things up than the stinky gas did I think

Thanks for the advice, guys. I was under the impression that you had to add the stabilizer stuff before it sat, but its worth a shot. I had just replaced the tank before the motor went, so hopefully that will make things a little cleaner, too. I'll probably do the fuel filter thing, too.

I just put all my old gas in my Dodge pickup. The 318 is a tank & it dosen't care what you feed it! :p If it's over a year old I sometimes add a little octane booster or laquer thinner....:D

Drain the old gas out of the tank. Than do as TooMany said and just ration it out each time you fill up, add a couple gallons until you use it up. Disposing of old gas is really difficult. Best to just use it up slowly by diluting it into the new gas at each fill-up.

  13. Dump a can of HEAT in it and try and use it. I lit the pusher off this year on the little dab of gas that was in the tank for 6 months, and 5 gallons of high test that was in my shed out back for a little over a year.

Come to think of it don't, maybe that was took my distributer and coil out.

I don't know how big your tank is but if you need to dispose of the gas I suppose that if it accidently spilled out on the ground somewhere and no one knew about it no one would be the wiser. I'm thinking that 5 or 10 gallons one time isn't going to throw us into the next Ice Age.

The bikes I store have a full tank of gas in the fall, in the summer I start them and ride them till it's used up. Each one has about five gallons in it. Most of the time I don't add fuel stabil. and i have had no problems yet. I would start the car and run it, you could add a half of tank of new stuff if your worried about it.

Hard call with this **** gas nowadays .... I've had mixed results with old fuel .... Lawn mower shop guy sez it starts to go with out stabilizer after 3 months .... Filling the tank will "probably" do it though ....

If you decide to dump it .... leave it in an open container / drain pan and it will evaporate in no time ...

  18. Do you have some weeds around the house?

Put it in the gas tank of the neighbors car who gives you greif about your cars.

Give the tank the "sniff test" If it smells like oil paint or varnish its gone bad. If it burns your nose and makes you dizzy it's probably still good.

The old 56 Pontiac had old gas in it when I dropped the tank. It was only about 2-3 gallons so I thought what the ****, and dumped it in the alley & flushed it with a water hose. Stupid,Stupid,Stupid The rank fumes caught the attention of the neiborhood and next thing you know the whole frickin fire dept shows up! They claimed I was dumping toxic waste down the drain & threatened me with an EPA fine. I told them it was an accident & I was deluting it with water to prevent any fire hazzard. They got out there fire hoses & continued to wash down the spill into the sewer for about an hour. The whole neiborhood smelled like gas for a week after!

This may be some sort of record, a friend got a 1950 Studebaker running that has sat since 1978 with a full tank of gas. Drove it around the swap meet every night last week at Hershey, sold it and it is on its way to England.
