i recently obtained a '56 premiere that had been sitting in storage for several years before i bought it (at least 4 to my knowledge). after reviving the original 368 to good running condition and getting the car driveable, i noticed the turbo drive transmission was slipping significantly. i am not familiar with this transmission and as a result took it to a shop to have my transmission gone thru and prob rebuilt. After 3 weeks the shop called and told me they could not figure out how to remove the ****** without removing the engine first. I know that it is a tight fit with the cross member in the frame, but i find it hard to believe that my only resort is to pull the engine in order to remove the ******..... in a "bind" and need some advice....anyone out there ever pulled one of these ******s out of a 56 lincoln premier? any advice would be greatly appreciated! thanks

According to my old Motor's Manual, the Turbo Drive is nothing but a beefed up FordoMatic. The service insructions are identical (In fact the Ford O, Merc O, and Turbo Drive are covered in the same chapter.) Unfortunately, there are no instructione re removal from the car. I've not done it but remember some guys rebuilding Ford Os and they didn't have to pull the engine. I do notice that the ring gear is on the torque converter so I don't know if it's built like an early Hydramatic where you have to separate the converter housing from the flexplate to remove from the car or is there is some other piece in there that connects the crank flange to the front of the converter.

    Hello there,

I don´t want to start a thread I think there are enough.
We pulled out the transmission of my 56 Premiere now I need a repair set/kit. Can someone tell me where to buy it? I only find Kanter but I don´t like that I always have to write them two mails to get on (short) answer...

I also find out why the car didn´t stop after shifting in "Park": the lock (I don´t know the right word) is damaged. Is it possible to get a new one?

And the last one: I also saw that I will get problems with the torque converter. I think it is between the turbine wheel and the stator (?). The areas where they contact are worn out. I think the pictures will speak for it self.

My friend has just removed his trans and torque converter from his 57 Premier to install a newer trans. I'm sure he would be interested in selling it. Let me know if your interested and i will hook you 2 up.

The parking pawl could be welded, then always use the parking brake first.

check with Fastco or Northwest. They have the rebuild kits. And probably have some of the other parts too.

Replaced the front transmission seal on (2) 56 Lincolns. Both times, I pulled the 368 engine as it appeared the xmsn would not come out from underneath the car at all, until the engine was out. However, once the engine was out, I could get at the seal OK, so I had no need to pull the xmsn out of the car.

Pulling the engine wasn't all that bad....just took alot of time.
BTW, Radiator needs to come out first.
Hardest part (for me) was getting that damn heavy hood off safely.
Ended up building a framework that the hood mounted to.
