My brother in-law has asked me to help him sell a '50 Merc rag top that has been in his family since new. The car is in a pretty sorry state......it's not been run since the early '70's. The car is rough, but it's all there. . I'm not sure if the car is too far gone to be a resto candidate for someone or if it's just a parts car at this point. I honestly have no idea what the car is worth in its current state or the best way to go about selling it. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
LOL! It's like throwing the Hail Mary pass on the auction site with 2 seconds to go! We'll see what happens.... I've requested the usuall- pics,convo,etc..... Maybe, just maybe the needle in the hay stack? HHHmmmmm? I'm game, but don't need to do a cheesegrater again. Kinda wore out on that! Fingers crossed! Racerex1- You listening?
I just looked at your profile and was wondering when the intro police would speak. Anyway it could be worth a decant amount if it is all there and has no major damage or rust issues but i see you are in NY so it probally has its share of rust. If you would post some more pics of the interior, floor pans, door pillars, truck area, inner rockers and frame we can give you a better idea of what it is worth or you can just give it to me. You are right, it IS to far gone...... I will give you $100 RIGHT NOW...and I live on the other side of the continant...... Shit, you did enough research to come to the hamb......
I'll take it!! The rules here are who says I'll take first will have the first on buying it.. Ah,wait..we are not in the classifieds??Oh well Racerex1...you're a newbie and you're welcome here so without jokes there are some rules to follow in this forum.. 1) do an introduction on the pertinent section.. 2) this looks more a selling post...so,if you like to sell the car you are obliged to put a price in the car classifieds section... if you're looking for an estimated value i'll say is not a junk car to me,i've rescued way more rusted stuff..actually its needing full restoration but is not a rusty bucket,so its worth something...good luck with the sale but im sure more than someone will interested in rescue this forgotten beauty PS.As ESK (wich sure knows a thing or two about Mercs) suggested post some more floor ,body, trunk pics to show us if there is any rust or weak spots..to give you a better advice
Too far gone? I know a detail man that can buff that paint out and clean the rest of it so that You wouldn't recognize it. If the other side looks like that side I'd say it never saw snow in it's life.
Guys....I'm straight up. I will reach out to those who expressed interest. I'm a late '60's and early '70's muscle guy.....I just finished a nut and bolt resto of a numbers matching '71 SS/RS Camaro and I'm about to start in on a body off a killer barn find, one owner, unmolested early C3 vette that fell into my lap. I'm a member of NastyZ28.com and Corvetteforum.com, so I know first hand the power of posting on a respected site. Being a motor-head, I want to see the Merc go someone that will appreciate it. As a FYI, I just helped my brother in-law sell the other family car......that car ended up going to a friend of mine.....a high option, one owner '60 T-bird with 60k miles that sat since '79. After seeing that car, I had high hopes for the '50 Merc. I made the trip up to see the car at their other home yesterday. After seeing the car, I knew that it was not the project for me, so I said that I would help them find a buyer for it. As side note, next to the Merc is a mint '57 Century, 16 foot long wooden boat with a period correct Merc outboard. I'm very motivated to help them sell the '50 Merc....so I can score the boat.
I would've posted the car in the For Sale forum, but I had no idea as to value....per the rules, you need to provide a price. I did some searching before posting...that's how I found this site....and I was not finding any comps. I'm aware that the car is somewhat rare, so I figure that it was worth asking. Most of the members on the sites that I frequent are more than willing to point a guy in the right direction when it comes to rare cars.....plus, everyone loves to see barn finds, myself included.
