So I pulled the rear gl*** (small window cab) by cutting out the old (hard and brittle) rubber seal, and then re-installed the gl*** with a new H-channel rubber window seal. A slight PITA keeping the rubber seal on the gl***, sealant running all over the place, but I got it in using parachute cord to pull the rubber through. I now need to do the windshield (also H-channel rubber) and am looking for tips and suggestions on how to go about this or whether I should have a pro do it for me. I dont want to break the gl***. I used the recommended sealant which was very runny. Any better stuff out there?
did you use 3m windshield bedding compound? this stuff should not be runny. the windshield will install the same as the rear. I would suggest having some help with the front. if not confident, then hire it out and watch how its done. also if it has stainless trim install the trim in the rubber before you install the gl*** in the truck.
Installing the windshield will be a bigger problem and you will need a extra pair of hands. When we installed the windshield in the 54 wagon there was 3 guys and it took nearly 2 hours to finally get it seated properly. If I had it to do over I would have got a gl*** man to install it. HRP
My friend does these all the time. His says to put the seal on the window and let it sit in the sun for a good 20 minutes. 2 sets of hands are a must. He also used paint stick ends that are filed for any prying. I think there are some hints on youtube under F100 windshield replacement. I don't think you need sealant.
It came in a small tube...looks like clear rtv but it runnier.. I dont recall if it was 3M but it was called out in the directions that came with the seal (Dennis Carpenter part). I dont have the stainless trim, just plain black rubber. Did you have any suction cup gl*** holder type things? I am mostly worried about handling the gl***. I can get extra hands. Good tip. I'll check out you tube. Thanks.
There is a YouTube video for the 57-60 windshield install. I believe Bill Reil posted it. Also if you are on Facebook join the 57-60 F100 truck group, lots of good information there. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
you might not need the bedding compound. I mostly used that stuff with older European cars. If the old rubber didn't have any then you should be ok without it. Definitely check out the video and have some extra hands. good luck.
Already a member over on the FB page but I tend not to use FB very much. Here is a great video I found and I noticed that he does not use any sealing compound. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOU_0HpS7To
