painting over rustoleum

    can you put automotive paint over rustoleum flat black. or will i need to repaint it with rustoleum .

    depends on the type of automotive paint, but you'll likely need to take it back down to metal.

    Never a good idea to mix brands, IMO. I guess it depends on the different paints and the size of the parts. If it's a small, simple part, try it. You can always re strip it and do it over. If it's a large part, spray a small sample part and try it to see what happens.

    One thing for sure, NEVER, EVER try to spray anything but Rustoleum paint over Rustoleum Rusty Metal primer. Ask me how I know......... :rolleyes:

    It depends on how "mature" the Rustoleum is if it's a few years old scuff it apply a light coat of sealer primer and paint it.

    I recently painted the roof of a car that was painted with rustoleum. Sealed it with a epoxy sealed ( DuPont DTM) and metal flaked it and Kandy patterns with no problems.

    sealer usually does the job...
