I found a LIFE "coffee table" book at the local outlet store yesterday called AMERICAN SPEED. Thought it was well worth the $5 they were asking. Lots of old racing photos. Thought I would share a few.
Text said he survived. Wisdom of the day was it was better to get thrown clear. Seat belts, roll bars, had yet to gain acceptance in the open wheel cars.
Cool pics. I've seen these before but great to see again as there is always some little detail you missed the first time.
Neat!! The autograph on the first one looks to be of Fireball Roberts, and then the guy resting below that is Fireball too I think. Man, he was my hero back when I first got into cars.
Hey, thanks for sharing the old race car pics. I once saw a guy named Orv Epperly thrown out of an old sprinter on the high banks at Winchester, In when I was a kid. He looked a lot like that one driver flying through the air except he was separated from one leg. The track photographer caught him and his separated leg flying through the air every bit as high as that one. He also survived and continued racing. Back then, sprint drivers got beat up pretty bad. That's a great pic of Junior.........really all tensed up ain't he!!
Yup, my bad, it wuz ol' JJ. I'm gettin' blind along with old. Don QUOTE=muffman58]You sure its not Junior Johnson?[/QUOTE]
