Now that you mention it, looks like the guy standing next to the car is hanging on pretty tight to what is left of it, like those guys are wondering what else to take??

Don't know what that is serving as a fuel tank, seems too big for a pressure cooker (now that would be a first!!)...thought it might be an aircraft oxygen tank, but seems too short for that, maybe an industrial oil tank??

Restoring and getting to drive that truck For Tom Willford, was one of the most satisfying things in my life. The best part was outfitting it with hand controls, so Tom could race it, and race it he did!

  5. That truck is definetly one my all time favorites. My brother and I are talking about doing something like Korneys "Gold Finger" Anglia in the future. That think blew my mind as a kid, especially with the lighted hand blinking to the beat of the music from speakers mounted out side. Did you race at the Last Drag @ Fremont?, I was there with my roommate and our high 11 second street race '72 Chevelle Wagon.

Hope this is not too much off topic.

Many years ago at Beech Bend Raceway I saw a big full size 60's?/early 70's? crew team chase vehicle signal the starter for a timed run. This big wagon full of crew members and probably tools and stuff, proceeded to rip off an eleven second 1/4 mile run. The track announcer later said he had received inquires about that car. He said their answer was that it was over 500 ci. and NOT normally aspirated. Does anybody know about that car, or have a picture of it?

10.60's are good numbers for a 4 banger on gas. Car had some torque as denoted by the wheelstand.

Back on post 34683 I posted this shot of Bobby Langley, at Pomona:

Some questioned whether this was Pomona or Green Valley, TX -- or maybe OCIR. I maintained that it was Pomona, orange trees in the background were a Pomona landmark back then, but the question remained unsolved...until yesterday, when I got the attached from Roy Baggs (Gasbagg on the HAMB):

Could not help but notice the debate surrounding the location of the Pomona
race under "quartermileclassics.<WBR>wordpress.com". I can reliably report that this was LA County Fairgrounds, (not Texas!!)as I took the pictures. I was just a snot-nosed kid from Cleveland at my first big event and those guys in those cars were GODS to me. I am amazed at your reccolection of these cars and their drivers (along with your fellow H.A.M.B. mates). Hope to talk to more later. Roy (gasbag)

I'm not always right, but gotta brag when I am...THIS IS POMONA! and thanks, Roy!

How about the chopped '54 Ford in the background!!!......
    or, isn't that a Hudson?

This photo sure shows why they called the dragster the Scorpion. Nose, scoop, and cage area all had theme work. Very talented team.

Couldn't that be Jack Clifford's Hudson?

Speaking of Jack Clifford, here is a Hudson he hopped up, sort of breaks the rules here, not in motion, not on a drag strip, but at least it has Moon disks:

Jack Clifford, founder of Hudson Performance Products and later Clifford Performance Products, reworked the Twin-H inline-six and a floor-mounted Dragfast Shifter was installed.

I suspect that the "red stuff" is homemade lettering. it could have been one of Ike Smith's stockers? He ran a car called "the beast" as a counterpoint to Chuck Purcell's "the beauty." Later, they really upset things with a 1954 Hudson Jet that featured a hood scoop to cover the Twin-H carburetion.

1964 would have been a correct time-frame for it to have been a Smith-built Hudson.
