I just purchased a pair of NOS ball joints for the Corvair front end in my heap. One is nice and tight, the other has about .010" up and down play and also wobbbles side to side. They are bone dry. Is this normal?

Seems to be. Some Ford ball joints have up to 3/32" and are within spec. The grease takes up the slack.

That's normal for dry joints. HRP

Grease the hell out of them before you drive it.

I never had a new ball joint that displayed any slack. The ball studs always needed moderate effort to move.

what little grease they put in them drys up while on the shelf . and the looks of the one its been sitting a long time ... on the lowers , grease them ***embled ( spindle mounted ) with no weight on them ( a arm supported wheel off ground ) first then lower them and see if it will take another pump as the weight of the spindle will open the surface between the ball stud and seat allowing grease on the dry surfaces
