    Outside of Nashville Tenn at 14-16yrs old I was the cutter and spiker,cut the stalk close to the ground,spike 7 stalks to a stick,and pray it didnt rain the night before you had to load it onto the wagon because the water made it 10 times more heavy than normal
    30 yrs now in the work force and that by far was the worst job Ive ever had

    Working on a logging crew near Downeyville, Ca. when I was 18, I worked setting chokers behind a Cat. We were working a canyon at a 60% grade. Only lasted two weeks, and I was in good shape. Worst job I ever had.

    Safety regulations would probably prohibit you from doing this now. Ahhh, for the good old days when a man could enjoy a good ride on a bomb and not be hassled. :D

    I worked R-R shop for A10s and B52s when I was in the USAFR at Barksdale. That nose down level flight attitude of the Buff "just ain't right". I know WHY it flies like that, and the reasoning, but it's unnerving still.

    The flight deck is 60 feet above waterline. If you know the height of the tail you have a real good idea of the ht of the plane.

    The Commanding officer of Ranger and the airwing commander at the time of this picture, are long long friends and former squadron mates.

    The B-52 has an odd landing gear arrangement. It has a forward main gear, aft main gear, and tip gear out on the wings. The tip gear does nothing but keep it fairly level. The aft main gear is well aft of the center of gravity..what this means is that the plane cannot "rotate" to take off. The wing is set at a positive angle of attack-the leading edge is lifted up when seen from the side with the fuselage level relative to the ground. Once she hits takeoff speed, the B52 just lifts off, and almost immediately assumes that nose-slightly-down attitude. Ya oughta watch one land, they crab in the wind something fierce, theres a control in the cockpit to adjust the crab angle, too..mostly used for taxiing and take off.

  20. Wow! If you can't rotate, then you can't "flare" when you land. You have to fly it all the way down to the tarmac! That could be a bit unnerving.....:eek:

    Thanks for the insight. I've seen B-52's in flight a number of times, but I never had the opportunity to see them take off and land. When I lived in the Mid-West, I saw the ones based at Grand Forks AFB in North Dakota and at K.I. Sawyer AFB in the U.P. of Michigan. Several times while driving through the boonies in the U.P., I saw them flying "below the radar" which looked as if they were at tree-top level ... very impressive.

    Small world... I also knew Admiral McGinn when he was the skipper of VA-27 on the Coral Sea (I was the spy for VF-21 then) and as my CO on the Ranger. Coolest, smartest guy, ever. Gary Nichols LDCR, USN (Ret)

    Yep on the Green Stamps. the cashier would put in your total purchase and the machine would spit out the stamps. Then you would git to lick em and stick em in the books to save up for that neat Murray Bike with the Balloon tires, or maybe Dad got his Coleman stove, sis got her doll stroller, or maybe mom got her Hamilton Beech kitchen mixer.

    I guess the 215 stood for 2.15 litre six cylinder grey motor it had .
