I am working on a a 50 chevy and the engine smokes. I was told the oil rings are sticking. Is there something I can do to get them unstuck without tearing the engine apart. I've heard of putting in ford transmission fluid in the engine. It needed to be the old ford fluid. Can any one tell me if this will work.?

I doubt ATF will help much, try Auto RX. I don't work for them but have heard good things about the product and it is made for this problem. If the engine has stuck rings.

If this is an original engine, it is likely that it is just worn out or has worn valve guides, which no amount of treatments will hide or fix.

Go to a G.M. garage and ask for "Top Engine Cleaner". It used to come in a pour can, but now most dealerships have it in a spray can. I've rejuvinated a few oldies with it.

If it is sticking oil rings....marvel mystery oil will fix it. Has worked for me at least 6 times.

Only way to know for sure is run a compression check. The valve stems or guides are probably worn out and they never did have good valve stem seals. Pouring Marvel Mystery Oil in each cylinder and letting it soak for a few days will help if the rings are stuck.

Way back when, there was a product sold that really helped with oil being ****ed down the valve stems. It was a set of stamped br*** pieces that looked like little Chinese hats. You placed them over the valve tip and springs and then adjusted the rocker arms for clearance. It let the oil drain down the side instead of letting it run down the stem. I doubt you could find them today.

My 50 chevy smoked. Then it through a rod the first time it was on the freeway. Keep it under 40mph until you fix. That engine is famous for wearing out do too poor oil circulation.

It' a Chevy. At least use Dexron Trans Fluid. Really I have used Dexron in several engines to clean and free things up.
Years ago I mixed a pint of Dot 3 Brake fluid with a quart of Dexron to free up a ring-stuck 216 in a 38 Chevy. I removed the spark plugs and squirted the mix into the cylinders. About 4 days later, I was finally able to turn the flywheel with a pry bar. After turning the flywheel a few times I was able to crank the motor using a 12 volt battery on the 6 volt starter. I ran the motor for about 30 minutes for several nights in a row. Changed the oil and drove the car about 6 months before selling.
Dexron or ATF will also free a sticking lifter. Give a try, just don't wind it to tight.
    Good Luck, Jeff
