I just bought a 1950 Chevy half ton pick'em up type truck. At least I thought it was. Turns out its a GMC. Should be the same tho, right?
Right now it is bone stock.
    No engine or ******.

I need to work out the steering for adding a big-block.
And considering what a drain my Merc has been this needs to be CHEAP!

    Show me what ya gots!

    Thanks guys!!

I think you wanna set it up so that when you turn the wheel to the right, the truck goes right and vice-versa...

I had to constuct mine with 3 joints and cut the double 'D' shaft to fit in between. I could probably better direct you if you post some pics of the issue area. Were you at the HRR last weekend?

if you plan on keeping the stock gear box and straight axle with a big block i dont see any thing here but a rube goldberg deal. a real mess.

    Whats wrong with it currently:
    4" play in the steering
    King pins shot.
To keep the stock front end I suspect I will need tie rod ends etc. as well.
Also, the stock steering box will not work with a small block OR big block upgrade as it sits on top of the rails.

Since I posted this I've talked to 5 guys with 48-54 trucks and gotten 6 opinions on what to do. Some say use the whole S-10 frame. Some say Camero clip. Others say Mousetang II.

I found the post on the S10 frame upgraede and that looks ok, but the one guy I talked too here that did that isn't happy with his.

I kinda feel like a dog chasing his tail if you get my drift.

If you want to keep with the original vein of the truck, but upgrade to a newer v8, then try to find a steering box from a Task-Force (55-59) Chevy of GMC truck. This box fit inside the C-channel of the frame, making it lower and out of the way of the v8. You can choose to keep the column that comes with the TaskForce box, but this will lower it in your cab area. Some think it's ok, others don't. I am cutting the column off of mine and adding Borgensen joints to keep my original column in it's original place in the cab.
Another option is to go to a front-steer later model Chevy truck box. Several maufacturers make kits to do this which include a new steering arm. This option will get you power steering to boot.
    I wish I hadn't sold mine...

i went with a 70s power steering gearbox, i was told by the napa guys it would work, & if you know me, there would always be some way that i could get something to work, but i am not sure how i will hoot it up, i think its gonna have to go right about where the stock one is, but the pitman will have to go on the inside of the 2 framerails, probably with less than 1/4" from the headers, & then a funky deal of rewelded lengthened bent pitman arm stuff, but maby it can go on upside down, i still have no idea how it even works
