I have a friend's uncle that just bought a 1929 chevy coupe. Will the spindles off of a 49 to 54 Chevy truck fit that axle without a lot machine work and is the 6 bolt pattern on the 29 and the 49 to 54 the same? just trying to get the old guy in this on the cheap but safe.
the king pins are different sizes SIDS will list the dia. of them. I was going to do the same thing so I could have hyd brakes. but now i'm just going to change the complete axel 53 pickup into a 31 chevy pickup, looks like a bolt in. and yes the wheel bolts are the same on a 31 as a 53
I've been told from my customers you can take the 40 and earlier inner bearing and seal and put them in the 41-59 hubs and it will fit the early spindles. You want to use the matching backing plates for the hubs. If you want 5 bolt pattern use 49-54 car hubs and drums with the 51-59 3100 pickup backing plates www.droppedaxles.com
In addition to the king pin size difference, some truck spindles have a different angle of inclination from the cars; one is around 4 and the other is 7 degrees. I'll take a look tonight at the article on swapping Chevy spindles I've been looking at in an early '90's R&C mag. Been thinking about better brakes on a '29 ch***is also. Later, *****6
I'm not talking about changing spindles. I'm talking about bearings only. The kingpin size is .734 dia 1928- 1940. 1941 -59 is .866 dia kingpin. The axles 1928-54 are the same dimensions 1928-54 except for kingpin size. You can see all this on my web site www.droppedaxles.com the 1932-39 car front axle is different then the pickup axle (spring width) Also the 32-36 car spindles are also different (way smaller bolt pattern for backing plates)
Sorry, I was responding to flamedcoupe's original question about using the later truck spindles on his '29 axle. That's some great info you've got on your website, '55 Merc. It looks like the answer to better drum brakes w/ the six bolt lug pattern for a '29 Chevy may be to go with the entire front axle and spindles from a '41-'55 1/2 ton truck. The kingpin to kingpin spacing is the same, as is the center to center distance on the spring pads, and the spring width as well. By changing out the axle, both the kingpin diameter and inclination are a non-issue. Way easy. I'd bought a '39 Chevy Master 85 axle to use on the '29, but the spring mounting on it is just a little too wide for the '29 frame. Thanks for pulling all that info together on your site. Your Norwood T-shirts look cool, too! Later, *****6
If you are getting these parts be aware that chevy changed from huck to bendix brakes about 1950. Much cheaper to get parts for and easier to adjust, probably easier to find also.
