Hi guys! I am running a Superbell 4" dropped axle on The Drag Rod... with Model A split wishbones. I am having trouble finding dropped steering arms that will put the tie rod and drag link below the wishbones. My friend Terry had some Speedway arms... and they weren't low enough. I am wondering if anyone has had any luck with anything off of the shelf. Or, did you notch the wishbone? Drop the drag link? On my Model A, I made the dropped arms... I am using all used parts on this build... so my search has been limited to things I find at swap meets and/or HAMB cl***ifieds or e-bay. I might have to make some... I know another option is to run them on TOP of the wishbone... but the engine sits low and I think the harmonic balancer might hit it. Ideas? Pictures? Sam
In the same boat. I bought the speedway arms. Thought they would bolt right up. I haven't mocked them up yet. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Pete and jakes makes the deepest drop arms I could find, super stout too. I ran the same set up in my A and there arms worked. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Think the part# was 1109 at pete a jakes... Just of the top of my head, not sure. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
You can use the Speedway arms, just flip the wishbone when you do your caster correction. This picture is from my build thread: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=1829252&d=1357323727 Aaron
I ran into the same problem with my 31, being that is on full air ride with a stock wheel base and not suicided I was worried the drag link would hit the balancer in case of a bag failure. I ended up just building some spacers to go under the steering arm out of heavy wall D.O.M. It solved my problem. I only needed an extra inch though. Not sure how much you need but maybe a spacer will work for you to clear the balancer.
Heat and bend the arms to wherever you need them to be.....do it slowly, with lots of heat, and let them cool slowly (no quenching!)......and be sure to maintain proper ackermann.
That's a slick way of doing it! Thanks for all the tips, guys! I will have to regroup and see what I can do! Sam
I thought someone was making them for the new 5" drop axles. I had to go really deep and used one like reefer shows above (from P&J I believe)
I just did a hambers car that came with an undropped 32 axle and 32 spindles, but he only had 35/36 bones that are designed to have the tie rod below. The 32 arms just can't be bent that much without loosing length if you try to go under... So, I flipped the 35/36 bones upside down and ran the tie rod above, like 32 had when new. It worked slick, and the caster needed changing anyways.
Somewhere I have an old (50's) Hot Rod article where a guy makes some dropped steering arms. Super deep drop. Starts out by flame cutting them from plate and by the end they have been shaped, shot peened, heat treated and are one of the nicest looking parts I've seen made from nothing on par with anything a high end boutique hot rod shop would make today. Not sure what kind of time you're willing to invest for this project, but I know you have the chops. I'll see if I can find the article if you're interested?
I did these for my coupe... but I was just hoping to buy something. I'm turning into a street rodder.
