I have a 1956 Dodge pickup 1/2 ton and I need a steering box I found one on line for 350 just wondering if there are any other options out there before purchasing this on I have a stock front suspension with a 1974 Dodge Dart steering column. Thanks for any advice. Have a Great Day! Jim
I can't believe a box from any Dodge pickup from 48 through 57 won't fit your truck. Older then 48 was a different truck, and Dodge made some changes in 58, but don't know if it effected the steering box or not. Dodge used the beam axle on trucks through the 1971 model year, my bet is with a little modification, any Dodge truck steering box from 48-71 could be made to work. Dodge also tended to make running ch***is changes, through the late 40s through at least through the mid 50s, meaning that as improvements came about, they were implemented as the parts became available, and were bolted on as an ***embly. You may have to use the steering linkage and tie rod ***emble that goes with whichever box you find. There is no way I'd pay $350 for a steering box for a Dodge truck unless it was new or completely rebuilt, even then it would require a lot of thought. Gene
My '54 the box and column are all one unit and I'm wanting to change it. Did you ever come up with a good solution?
I found an original and cut the steering column welded in a filler piece to make the steering column a solid piece then installed a Borgesen (SP) coupler and the replacement steering box. I have had no other problems with this I currently have a spare steering box if you need one. Jim
