Spent the day stripping one of my project cars. I want to chop it ,but not sure how much. Anyone got experience? I'm going to replace the back glass with a section from a 39 sedan. So I think that might make the back glass a non issue. I got rid of several tons of interior and rat crap. Would anyone be interested in the back glass, it looks very good.
So is this to common a chop or am I going to the only one who has tried it? Yuo guys awlays got the answers. Just wondering why I got no responce to this post.
i did this one about 10 years ago...the chop is more complex than a 2 door, but many have been done...i decided to go with slanted "B" pillars and a 51 ford back window, that made the degree of difficulty considerably less, although i did regret that choice, and would much rather the 51 back glass.....
FEDER and FEDSLED did a nice job on a 50 4dr a while back. Think they have lots of photos...........OLDBEET
I hope mine truns out as nice as your pic. I also hope I like the 39 back glass. I already got the contintal kit made up,and the 56 packard lights ready. I've a set of 58 T bird seats( wrap around ) to go in the back ,but I'm not sure that will work. Thanks guys for the info.
your plans sound alot like chopmerc's car ended up like. when it was slod it had packards and a t-bird seats
In process pic's of a 49' I did in 1957. 51' rear quarters , about $43 each brand new. 51' rear glass, $15 from junk yard. 54' Pontiac grille, $24 brand new. The last 54' Pontiac grille I saw had an asking price of $450 and had to be rechromed.
Thanks for the photos. It sure is gettin' harder to do a merc mod that hasen't already been done. Your right about the prices of goodies. I hope to post pics of all 3 of my mercs and the 26 T V8 we are working on.
Check out greaterdakotaclassics.com he is doing one right know and has a lot of pics of the construction on the web site.
PHATBOY, all the pics I have are in photo form so I can't really show ya. I have a few on my photobucket of it complete, but no in progress. The way my dad(FEDER) and I did my 4 door is we eliminated the rear window part that opens into the roof and inserted a front drivers window farme on the passenger rear and visa versa for the other side. we just moved the top far enough ahead that we did not have to split the roof and insert it.and when it came to the B-pilar I cut an offset out of them (about 3") and swapped sides, once again I made the cut under the drip rail as not to get into the top. looks way cleaner than trying to fit the drip rail back up. When we got to the rear window we just put it where we liked the looks of it and started making filler pieces around it. Moving the roof ahead makes the rear package tray get kinda diffficult with the trunk hinges being there so I made a new one three inches in front of it so I could keep the hinges and still support the rear window where it needed to be. Beleive it or not I have a video floating around that has a lot of tricks in it and the guys doing a '51. If I can figure out how to make a copy I can send it to ya. hope this helps. http://photobucket.com/albums/v484/fedsled/?action=view¤t=HPIM0212.jpg
In that pic you can see what I meant about the rear quarter window and swappin them from sided to side and inserting them with fronts. FED
Hey thanks Fedsled, You guys did an outstanding job. Thanks for the info and pics. " I'm gona git started rat now." GENTLEMEN START YOUR SAWSALLS .
Yeah, =mike='s Merc was a 4-door but I don't have any pics of it. Tried looking on the Sacred Karts of San Diego CC web site but it looks to be shut down. The roof on the 4-dr is exactly the same as the 2-dr, the only difference in the chop is how the rear doors are cut. If you can get your hands on a couple of 2-dr doors then you may want to just go ahead and move the door jambs back and make it into a coupe.
I think I saw Mikes merc on here some years ago. I thought then it was the best mild kustom I'd seen. I've got 4 mercs 3 are 4 drs. I'm thinking of making a convert of the next one. It's a 49. 2 dr merc doors are hard to find in Arkansas. I would like to try my hand a making a tudor out of a fordor. Anyone need any parts or glass out of these? I've got some flat motors out of different years also.
Am I mistaken or isn't this the (PRE-GREEN) Sewer Pickle in the background???? I thought I had some other pics of the fucker....
