hi guys I am about to start a ha/ga build in the next few weeks. I have a slant six and will be running a 3 or 4 speed (have both) A model front axel and thinking about a dana 35 from a jeep do you guys thing the dana will hold up ok? any info and help will be great thank all
dana will be just fine here in Tulsa we have been running ,dana 8 AND 9 INCH FORDs some of the cars have over 500 hundred runs on them L J
The Dana should be fine, Just make sure it is in good condition. Weighs less and uses less HP to use than the big Ford units.. I use an S10 rearend... BTW.. Use the 3 speed. 4 sp. is not needed...
thanks guys I have a few ford 9" and 8 3/4 mopar but they just seem to heavy and to much intertia to make them move
Mopar 8 3/4" is a real good setup, weight is less than a 9" and about the same as an 8" Ford. Ran an 8 3/4" in our 1200 HP blowen dragster for years without a problem. They are old school and have been around drag racing for years.
I'm running my slant with an 8" ford. It's 35lbs heavier, but I couldn't get better than 4.10's for my previous 7 1/4" Chrysler. With the Ford's 4.62's pulling 29" hides I'm hitting about 4800 at 102 in the 1/4 mile traps. Typically shift around 5500. Haven't looked at the tach at the 1/8th, but am roughly 1/4 of the way through third by then.
Welcome laxhotrods, I also run a slant 6, If you do any improvements to that motor, you first need to increase the oil pan size. I run a Dana 30 rear end w/posi, 410 gears on coker tires. When I was running a 4 speed my best 1/4 mile time was 12.25. with 355 gears. When I changed to 410 gears, it was not any faster. Now running a 904, with 410 gears, best 1/8 mile of 7.21 @ 94 MPH. 1/4 mile best is 11.53 @ 114 MPH. my car is a little heavy at 1540 lbs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rtr8O4tV1Qw this run was a 11.63.
that thing is awesome! what size converter are you running? I would think it would take around a 9" to get any stall out of it being the slant does not make a lot of torque
Hi Laxhotrods, that convertor is a TCI 4500 stall, I don't remember the size. On the dyno, 4800 RPM is is 305 torque. That's 14 to 1 compression.
On my convertor, I thought that the box that it came in had a cutout for the size, but I was wrong. the only cutout was a small round hole for the snout. Sorry, I checked it today. Joe
what steering box are some of you guys using? I have a ross box in my other car should I look for one of those
corvair vw mustang spe use what is available and cheap . will it be easy to mount their is no set box the idea behind these cars is so a guy working a 40 week can race.
that's it I have a few corvair boxes and a vw one I want this to be a low buck build also. I have had high dollar race cars like miller 4-link dragsters when I started out I was in a old 169" FED with a mutt small block and had the most fun. I want to get back to that with a open trailer small tool box and go racing
Laxhotrods -- VW Steering turned out fine and I am happy with it. Yes the cage is Mild Steel 1 5/8" - .118 Some night when you have a few hours go through my build and "bobw" build thread. Lots & Lots of pictures that may be of help. "bobw" is a true builder with tons of talent, I am just a "Racer" trying to build a hot rod. PM any time if you want more information or pictures.
I run a Suzuki Jimny box. Sometimes called a Sierra. I made an extension out to the side with a support bearing. Sorry no pic's, long lost in computor crashes and things. The Suzuki box is small and light with only 3 1/2 turn lock to lock, nice big meaty mounting bolt holes too. I think somewhere in these posts is a picture I sent.Nigel.
thanks for all the help guys I know I am being a pain but I really do appreciate it could I get any of you to post some pics of your cage with out the body it would help thank again guys
Here's a shot with the cage almost done. Don't listen to old28. He is a very good builder and I am just an old hack. I borrowed a good bender and that was important. You are not a pain with your questions. We're pleased to see another car under construction.
Nice car Bob. Do you remember how much tubing it took by any chance? I plan on ordering next week Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
