I have a 37 dodge coupe, it has the original drivetrain. Was wondering if anyone out there would know if there is a overdrive that could be attached to this trans or if it is possible to bolt a newer four speed trans to this motor ? Any help would be greatly appreciated.....
This may sound crazy but do a compression test. I know a guy with a 41 Plymouth coupe who had the same idea, either an overdrive or change the rear axle gear ratio. But the engine was worn, compression was low, so he had the engine rebuilt first. The new engine took away all desire to change the trans or rear axle. Those old flatheads can be severely worn, and way down on power, but give no sign of it. A ring and valve job can make a big difference even on an engine that seems to run well.
The bell housing pattern is the same for Chrysler straight eights, so you could potentially use a vintage overdrive from another mopar if you can find the parts.
I don't think they offered an overdrive in 1937 but they did in the fifties. A Plymouth or Dodge trans will fit your car. Good luck finding one.
Dodge were the first to offer overdrive in the 30s, from 33. Not sure the availability these days but try here or Atlas Obsolete. I wanted one for my 36 Dodge but couldn't find one. But after i blew the doors off a mates 36 ford coupe i didn't need one lol.
there is a guy on the P-15/D-24 site that specializes in 1953 cran brook over drive ******s,,,i believe he is in the midwest in the US,, do a search over there or sign up and ask around,,,
The original-style overdrive comes as part of the ****** because of the way the two work together. The ******/o.d. combo is available if you look around, but not cheap.
i run a t5 in my 51 with a flatty and love it. that with 3.55's in the rear works perfect together. pulls plenty hard in first and cruises around 75 at 2300 rpm's
