I am mainly interested on how the two axle types were blended together.

If anyone has any pictures of the ends on that axle please post them.

I know the full penetration gig,but how is the transition from an I beam to a round tube. I would think all the welding to fill would cause lost of stress in a critical area. I would love to see a closeup picture of one of the ends.

Im planning to slide the I beam ends inside the tube a ways and rosette weld then weld and blend the joint at the ends of the tube.

Anybody here ever see the ductile iron ends Jim Kirby used to slide in his Super Bell tube axles? Easy to duplicate from a dropped I-Beam...
Kirby's ends were '+' shaped, slid into the tube ends and were 360 degree welded.

The 'improved' ones were also rosette welded, some previous ones having cracked at the perimeter welds. (some were blamed on hydrogen embrittlement from chroming, but others were blamed on finish grinding of the welds by owners)

Of the later rosette welded ones, I never heard of another cracking.
Looks like Don Orosco's are fabbed from flame-cut ends of steel plate. (long 'neck' at spindle end)

I have some of those Plymouth tube axles like on Doane's roadster. BE advised that they are thin wall tubing, and would be best with 6" plug-in spuds...

Look at Doane's front frame...it still had the '32 horns with this axle.

Greg, Thanks for posting the picture, that is exactly what I Was looking for.

Mike, I was thinking of about 6" also, but since you bought up how Don's may be a flame cut piece opens up some other ways to go about this.

  11. This would make a really cool thread to see here on the HAMB.
