Iwould say Ed Roth and his T-shirts and bubble gum monster car cards, from there it was model cars that got me infected.

  3. My Dad gave me the old car disease. He bought a 1931 Dodge coupe in 1959 and gave it to me in 1967 when I turned 15. I still have it. We would frequent the "Old Car Festival" at the Henry Ford Greenfield Village each year meeting people in the hobby. It took and never diminished.

Dad gave me my start, he did most of the work on his own automobiles. He gave me the worn out or broken parts to play with. At about 16 I bought a 32 Chevy 2-door, Learned a lot from that old car. Later that year I bought a 28 Model A, got it running and still have the motor, cowl and fenders on my current car.

Like 31Dodger said my Dad gave me the Old Car "Disease". He worked for Chevrolet as a service writer for many many years in So Cal. He'd point out different car makes and model while driving down the road..

I remember him workiing on cars to bring in extra money and I would help handing him tools and getting pissed & cussing when I gave him the wrong one LOL...So I learned quick...

The Olds in my profile has been part of the family before I was born...Now it's mine and Im working on a 61 chevy project truck and I want an early fifties classic.....

My dad, dirt track racer in the late 40s to early 50s. Mostly in southeast New Mexico. Dad would get a new Ford car or pickup and swap out the engine for the lastest Caddy engine. We raced gokarts together while that craze was going on. He once built a 55 Olds into a pickup, using the rear of a 5 window chevy cab. Turned out really nice, not a hatchet job like a lot of them. He loved Indy and circle tracks but never got in to drag racing. Been gone a long time now, still think of him often. Honest to the bone and a hard worker.

My dad- Born in 1930, served with the Seabees, and always had colorful stories of his late teens and early 20s. Told me of the road races from our to the next one on the back roads, and who had the best record. His vehicle of choice was a 35 Ford coupe in 1948. He lost it on a hairpin corner and rolled it and broke his collar bone. After that he graduated to a 47 mercury convertible, later a 56 crown victoria, 64 country squire that I remember as a kid and lots of other cars and trucks. He bought a new 56 ford truck for work and I recall riding in that before trading it in on a 1964 F250. I also remember driving his 1948 Diamond T dump truck with the Contentental gas engine and a White Mustang dumper.
He told me of the fun at the local filling stations where all the single guys hung out to meet chicks as they came by. and how he asked the gas pumper to fill his car with water and came out to find a garden hose on the floor running out the bottom of the doors. He and his brothers rebuilt a flathead in the cellar and after getting it back in the car had to drag it a mile before it loosened up and started. So I bought a 35 Ford truck from a friend of his when I was 14 and been into older vehicles ever since. Lost my dad when he was only 50, but the memories are forever.

  9. My dad, mechanic/body man extraordinaire started the flame. He built midgets when we lived in Indiana.
My uncle kept the fire going with go karts, and a love of flattrack motorcycles.
But my real debt of gratitude will always go to Mike Norris, who drug me along when we took out one of the last FED AA/fulers in div.4 back in 69.
God, it was an outrageously good time! Impossible to reminisce without a smile...
Still playing with race cars and hot rods today at 65.

My Dad ever sense I was a kid went with him to the shop. He was always painting something. Some of his friends had cool race cars also like the Filthy Forty and Ganggreen both Willys coupes.

  11. This is the way it was for me in 1971-2! If you wanted wheels you bought something cheap and fixed on it until it was dependable.
Lots of Saturdays spent wrenching so you had wheels for a date on Saturday night. Chances are a friend or two would be at your place helping because they were double dating with you.
My dad was my worst enemy at the time, wouldn't give me any help financially or mechanically. He knew his shit about cars, but I think he was scared that I might get away from him if I had a running car. His attitude probably made me learn more than if he had helped me on my car.

My high school automotive technology teacher Mr. Griffin got me started. Micky Ellis and Dale Hammon have helped me greatly of the past two years and continue to.

I got me started. My dad was always a fan of cars, mostly 50's and 60's Fords but he always took his cars else where to get worked on, never to turn a wrench himself. I got hooked when I was 14 and got my first look at a hot rodded 56 Chevy Bel Air. The wheels, the sound of that dual exhaust the stance it got me thinking " I'd like to own a car like that some day" Well I still don't have that exact type of car but I haven't been able to leave anything alone that I've driven since. I'm actually the only car guy in my entire family. Both my brothers would love to have something older but don't know a wrench from a screw driver when it comes to automotive.

Now I'm trying to get my kids interested while they are teenagers.

My father, a career Air Force flyboy, got me started. But he always lean toward the unusual picks, such 1951 Nash's and International trucks. Mom would make him buy a four door station wagon, when we needed a new car to move to another air base, such as a 1959 Chevy wagon, but he would always have the biggest motor installed(348). He had a 1955 Chevy, 4 door sedan, with a later FI unit, that someone in the unit would pull off their car, just to see if he could get it to work. At one time in his life he even ran his own gas station, but flying was in his soul. He would say to the crewmembers at the auto hobby shop, "You know what is wrong with your car, you have the hood open to much".

  17. I am one of those who discovered the old car disease all on my own. My dad had a 49 Ford coupe when I was a kid and I think I thought more of it than he did. He wrecked it when I was 7 and he bought station wagons from then on. I have always had the desire to buy an old junky coupe from the 30s and hot rod it.

    The Million Stars
    by Gary Campesi

"Gary, will you run down to the store and get a loaf of bread." my mother asked.
"Sure." I said. Thus began an adventure that has lasted over fifty years.

As I snugged up my high-top Keds and tucked the white t-shirt into my Dungarees, she gave me fifty cents which was enough for the bread and a candy bar. The halo light on the black and white Zenith glowed as I left my house.
    "See you later Matt Dillon."

George's General Store was only two blocks away; a distance that made a twelve year old feel like an adult. As I left the house I noticed how bright the night sky was. There must have been a million stars out. The sky didn't seem black, but ultramarine blue and the late summer air felt wonderful. As I passed my grandmother’s home I noticed a lot of lights on; probably one of my aunts getting ready for a night out. The brief walk to the store seemed all to brief, as it usually did. Headlights of passing cars illuminated the sidewalk on Pittsburgh Road. The air was filled with mint that grew wild in the vacant lot next to my Grandmother’s house.

Arriving at George's General Store I opened the screen door.
"Don't let the door slam shut." Crack! One more for the books.
I pick out a loaf of bread and a fine Kit Kat bar. Time to head home.
    "Good night Mr. G".

"Don't let the door slam shut." This time I remember. As I pause to let the creaky door close gently those stars catch my eye again. "Amazing. There are so many." Walking along the edge of the road I can smell the asphalt and hear the cars pass, quietly approaching in the distance and past me. Their tires seem as though the road is sticking to them. The zing, zing, ziiiing of the tires moving away until I can't hear them. I'm about fifty feet from where I'll turn left at Grandma's house enjoying the night, the Kit Kat and those stars.

Gram's lights are still on as I round the corner. And there it is. Black and glistening.
Where did this come from? It wasn't here ten minutes ago. Crackling as its metal innards cooled, I can smell exhaust still lingering and leather and rubber. I can't move. A million stars sparkle in the ebony paint. There, in front of me, is something called an MG.

This is not the ordinary Plymouth or any Ford that I had come to know. I look inside.
There is the smell of leather, a large steering wheel and a floor shift. Wood! A wooden dash and gauges of chrome; like a clock that Gram had on her wall.

As I walked away, taking the last few steps to my home, I notice my aunt leaving with someone
I don't recognize in the MG. The sound of it filling the warm night air, the dim red glow of the taillights and the bumper mounted spare disappear into the night. Zing, zing, zinggggg.

A few days pass and I an anxious to find out the who, what, when and why of the MG visitor. My aunt tells me that the car belongs to Ed. It would seem that Ed is my aunt’s new boyfriend.

Some time passes and Ed is now Uncle Ed. Uncle Ed probably has more to do with me becoming a car guy than anyone else. I didn't know a lot about sports cars when I was young, but Uncle Ed took care of that quickly. When he and my aunt moved to their own little home I would ride my bicycle for visits. On one visit, while Uncle Ed was working on his basement, he came over to the table where I was sitting and handed me a foot high stack of "Sports Car Graphic" magazines. "Would you like to have these" he said. As I looked down on the black BMW 507 on the cover of one of them I said "Yes!"

I still have those magazines; fifty years older at this point. They read just as well today.
As I look at that black BMW on the cover I'm reminded of Uncle Ed and that MG
and those million stars. How some things just stick with you.

I never saw that many stars in the sky again.

Guess I became a gear head in my early teens, drawn to the little books that appeared each month on the United Cigar Store magazine rack. All that candy paint and chrome on those CA hot rods and customs was like a siren's call to me. Then I discovered the orignal Honest Charley catalog and read it cover to cover, each edition, in study hall. By my mid-teens I was further inspired by a guy named Gordon Ross, who was installed in the New England Auto Racers Hall of Fame last year. Gordon built '37 Chevy coupes to run NASCAR at Agawam, MA in the 60s, powered by small block Chevrolets. He had a special room on his welding shop where the current race car sat on jackstands, sort of like a scupture. His attention to detail and his workmanship drew me to spend time hanging around there. I remember his shop was a International Truck dealership too and the front end of those race cars was heavy duty IH parts, very sanitary. Gordon was always willing to answer a kid's questions and when I got my first 283" chevy from Volce Auto Salvage in Poughkeepsie, I rebuilt it by alternately working on it and trudging up route 9 to ask another question. By damn, that motor was a good one, Gordon gave me a Duntov cam for it and sold me a '47 Ford tudor to put it in. Pretty heady stuff for a kid in a small upstate farming town, circa '61. It didn't hurt that he had a young guy working for him, Bruce Tremper (who I am still friends with today) who had a Hondurus Maroon lowered '57 Ford Ranchero with a 430 Lincoln in it,white tonneau cover and all. Man those were the good old days for sure!

My Uncle got me into this addiction.

There were days where all we did was listen to oldies, pop open a hood and just talk about cars for hours.

Right now we're working on getting his 58 Biscayne back on the road.

I'm not sure who got me started, but if I ever find that no good SOB, he's going to pay for it. Ruined me for life.

My dad for sure, although as a bodyman he thought mechanics were on the dark side. He worked at a little Ford Dealer (Thad Felton) in Baytown and worked Saturdays 1/2 day. I got to hang out there and all the mechanics called me Little Hoop. They often worked on their race cars and stuff on weekends, I was doomed at an early age.

I totally agree with Rickybop. Although my dad was a manager for Firestone for 30 yrs, he was not a car guy. His shop employee's for the most part had nice cars/trucks. I would go with him to work on Saturdays and watch the guy's work on their own cars. My dad would also give us Firestone shwack all the time, so the car game kinda grew on me. I'm building a 56 F100 with my 2 boy's, 15/8 yrs old, and they are both very interested in the hobby.
