I have a 49 chevy with 57 235 6 cyl. I am trying to find the Timing for this engine. I have been told everything from 10 deg btdc, to 10 deg advanced. I know it depends on the driver, and the engine. Looking for a base number. Was told to put a gl*** of water on the valve cover and adj until the ripples go away. Thanks in advance.

10 degrees advanced IS 10 degrees BTDC....
There is a hole in the bellhousing on the p***enger side. There is a ball imbedded in the flywheel. A timing light flash should illuminate the ball in the hole when its timed right.

Maybe my thinking is wrong, I am use to a harmonic balancer. I thought anything before the "0" mark was retarded, after was advanced. so 10deg Btdc would be retarded. or am I the retarded one.

Before 0 is advanced and after 0 is retarded

  5. Huh, always wondered what that hole in the bell housing was for...not sure about the gl*** of water but the 235 in my '58 sounds exactly like a Singer sewing machine when it's running.
