Mexican Blankets and seat belts

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 56PontiacPiano, Aug 7, 2013.

  1. Hey all, so the upholstery in my Poncho is pretty faded, torn, etc. I got two large mexican throws that fit over it nicely. However, I want to install new seat belts in the front seats (car did originally come with the seat belt option). Can I cut through the throws so I can fit the seat belts through? Or will cutting that material cause the blanket to fall apart...I'm part Mexican yet surprisingly I don't know! Anybody ever do this before?

Will eventually unravel and rip farther apart where you cut it.
Figure where the belts will come through, then make the cuts allowing a little extra for stretching, then take it to a local upholstery shop and for all of 5-10 minutes have the upholster sew a bead around the cut edges to seal the material and you should be good to go.

Slip em a little cash for their time.

  3. Can I use tape or glue or something to keep it from unravelling? The cut marks will be tucked under the seat anyways so I don't much care for appearance purposes...

You could but tape and glue will dry out and be short term plus the tape /glue may get on your pants. I suppose you could tuck the blanket under the seat but.......... I just noticed in your profile that you are still in high school ( senior.)

One night with the girl friend at the drive in movies ( then again do you know about drive in movies or have one in your area ?)
If you happen to go to one with the girlfriend, forget about the tape/ glue holding or the blanket staying tucked under the seat anyway.

Nope. You'll have a ball of thread on your floor and still need a seat cover. BUT, if you're handy with a sewing machine you might be able to s***ch the edges of the slots.

I'd just buy a set of those good covers that come in two pieces. The belts won't get in the way. In fact, some are made to account for the belts.

You obviously care, otherwise why do anything at all? Do it right and be proud.

  7. Young man, now is the perfect time to learn to do things right! do as corncobcoupe suggests and get the holes bound, it is cheap, and your next girlfriend will love you even more because you "do things right" Wink wink!

may not be as styling but, lay the blankets lengthwise - tuck in under seats and use bungee cords on back of seat to tighten - then will not need to put holes in them for seat belts. so, did you get the brakes repaired?

that is good advice from corncob, those babies really unravel when cut because of the woven process. Do it right, you will be glad. Cool Poncho bro. ~sololobo~

  10. I added some fresh brake fluid and pushed up the hardware in the rebuilt MC, I think I just need to get underneath and push the locking clip in tight, and I should be good. It'll stay still but I have to press the pedal all the way to the floor, which isn't good at all. But, can't get under their really. I'm a big guy, and i've only got a driveway and no jack or anything...I'll ask the mechanic shop to look her over. Tomorrow I got a friend's dad coming over with the correct socket wrenches to take out my spark plugs so we can clean them, gap, check for spark, etc. If worse comes to worse and i STILL can't start it for some reason, I'll just push it up the street to a different mechanic, or call a tow truck to come tow it to my original mechanic.

I made a poncho from a cheap Mexican blanket once. Sewed a muslin rectangle where I wanted my head hole. Cut a slit through that. Then sewed more muslin around the opening to kind of tape it, lots of zig zag stictches. It held up fine. Washers, dryers, camping trips.

Go to the home ec cl*** in your high school' scope out of the girl you like. Take her the blanket and ask her to sew what you need. Great way to start a conversation and brake the ice, get your blankets sewn and maybe a phone number. If you do two blan ket way, use suspenders to hold the blankets tight' no holes from the bungie cords.

want to know a little secret on how to keep it from unraveling.. take a solder gun with a flat tip and trace a narrow oval with it (not while its on the seat mark it then pull it off )... and the center piece will fall out it will melt the ends of the fabric and keep it from coming appart. you can also go to a craft store and put anti fringe glue ontop of that just to make yourself feel better. This ****** has done it and works well.
you could take it to an upholstery shop and have them sew a small piece of vynil where you mark it and and they will sew a piece on , have them top s***ch it and cut the center out. shouldnt be more than 20$

  14. I don't think we have any more home ec in our school.
Lots of cl***es getting cut. I like that one tip about the soldering iron...May just have to try that out.

Really guys, REALLY? You actually DON'T know these comments are racist, insulting, and in the case of flattie: misogynous and ***ist? Would you be typing out the same stereotypical racist terms if he were talking about African-Americans? Recommend slipping a "roofie" to a girl if it were YOUR sister?

This is what you think is "humor"?

To the OP, if I were trying to do this and spend minimum dollars I'd carefully make a slice with a single edged razor and IMMEDIATELY seal the fibers I'd cut with Super Glue. Just don't glue shut the slice you just made. Maybe impregnate the last 1/4" around the slice to reinforce it. It won't last forever but an upholstery shop is NOT going to s***ch it for the couple of bucks a high school kid can afford.

I'm not sure how the poncho seats are but a buddy pulled the shot but existing covers from the seats in his 1950 Dodge, wrapped them in the blankets, then hog ringed them back on.

He spent extra time getting the patterns to line up and in the end it looked really sharp.

I've never done this but you could try just needle and thread. Couldn't hurt sorry if this has already been suggested.

Just because it offends you or some people does not mean it offends all. Im not retracting my sarcasm.

Back to the post. Trust me on the soldering gun trick. The flat foot works awesome . Basically most of those blankets are nylon yarn and when you press the soldering iron it melts the yarn flat (do both sides) , the super glue will not penetrate all the way through the yarn, resulting in frayed yarn sooner than later.
Good luck and if you need any help send a pm or email me i have my email listed

Two blankets. . . one for the bottom and one for the back, seat belt in between.

  21. ...... I would prefer the blankets be called "Hispanic blankets" (tongue in cheek).... although they were probably made in China.

OP nice car ... follow Corncob's advice.

I actually tuck and rolled a Mexican blanket. You need to glue either a white sheet or Muslin to the back of the blanket before cutting it or sewing it.

I also sprayed Scotch guard of the blankets when I was done since it is basically yarn.

That's funny, there are lots of "hispanic americans" in Texas....they are made in Mexico....LMFAO...

  25. Perfect right there I think...so I can just glue any oridinary sheet to the back of the throws? I have a spray can of adhesive that I used for my headliner as well as carpet...will that do? I'll get some of that scotch guard too, that sounds like a smart thing to do.

also, the weave on these blankets ****, I did this to see if I could do it. The yarn strands eventually pulled apart in various places leaving me with having to put drops of super glue on the ends to keep them from continuing to unravel. Not an ideal material for the wear and tear seats go through.

correct... anything will work. You are just giving it some rigidity.

  28. Well, I'll only be using these as seatcovers for at least a year or two, until I learn to sew and make my own new upholstery, or take it somewhere when I have the money to get them reupholstered...door panels too.
