I am looking for a GMC 270 starter. Years between 1950 thru 1958 I think will fit. I read that the GMC 256 was modified and became a 270 for the military so maybe a starter from a 256 will fit as well. Hopefully an expert on the old GMC engines will find this post and help me out.

    Thanks,

You should introduce yourself first in the introduction forum.....All 228-302 GMC starters interchange on non military bellhousings. In fact a Chevy 216 or 235 starter will work......but...there's 6 and 12 volt starters, each one with their own flywheel so to speak. 6 volt flywheel ring gear has 139 teeth,12 volt has 168. So you need to match the starter to the flywheel. There's usually a tag on the starter with a part number and voltage.Red tag 12 volt, black is 6 volt..If it's missing, shift the starter drive to the engaged position,6 volt start drive goes straight out,12 volt drive spirals as it goes out.

Thanks for the info. I am from North Dakota. Not much else to say other than I am retired. Just trying to find a starter that will work on a GMC 270. If I understand you correctly, starters from all engines between 228 and 302 will fit a GMC 270, correct? This engine is 12 volts so I'm guessing the flywheel has 168 teeth. My old started is completely shot and not rebuild-able according to a starter repair shop. The dealer wanted the number of the old starter but that number is deleted from their system and can not be cross referenced accurately. Would you by chance have a number of a starter from one of the other engines you have listed?

    Thanks

Yes,any 12 volt GMC 228-302 starter or Chevy 235-261. In fact the part number on the foot operated starter is the same for all. Delco number should be 1107634

Not necessarily, it could have been converted from a 6V system.
