Got a 1963 Mercury Monterey with a 390 FE, what are my options for a manual transmission? Preferably a 5 speed. I'm a new guy to FoMoCo but loving all the new info. Thanks for the help.

A previous thread about FE manual trans conversions mentioned that T-5 might not be strong enough. For a 5 speed you might have to go to $$$ Tremec.

  4. we had a fe with a 3spd od and loved it. lots of red light to red light action in high school. those average t5s that most people use behind their flat heads and sixes will be probably shred behind fe torque. x2 on tremec if you got $

Great, I don't mind the 3 speed but I'd like to go out of town at freeway speed without the high RPMs

FOMOCO, in the '50s and '60s (and Pontiac in the early/mid '60s), used the Warner T-85, which has been around a long time and was the base transmission from which the Warner T-10 4 speed was derived. Available with and without OD, and should be a bolt on with a manual trans FE bellhousing.

I used a Richmond 6 speed in my '65 Biscayne. 3:27 first gear with a .76 overdrive. Running a 3:42 rear, it was like having 4:56's around town and 3:08's on the freeway.

    Is that a double overdrive? .9 in 5th and .76 in 6th ?
    3.42 x .76 = 2.6 final
