Bonneville tent camping tips and advice for 1st timer's

May be a stupid question but since I have never been there. Here goes. Is there any place for my teardrop camper that I can get electricity ? Don't have a generator.

Not a stupid question. But the answer is there is no electricity at the Bend. Its pretty primitive. My suggestion would be to pay Harbor Freight a visit and pick up one of their cheapie generators

My son and I are planning on leaving tomorrow morning for our first trip to the salt. I think we're prepared enough to, at least, not die.

I've got a 2000 Excursion so should the tent get "removed" we should be ok. This site has been a big help getting ready for this and to all of you I say thanks. I think our first stop will be the Museum site, but we'll scope out the bend too.

Like I said I planned to bring our bicycles and cruse the pits on our way to the starting line. This is the part where I'd like some input, I was thinking of towing a wagon with water, snacks, sunscreen, and other assorted goodies on my bike. Good idea or bad? Suggestions on what to throw in there are also welcomed.

I'd like to put into words how excited I am to make this trip. My dad passed away last year while some of his buddies were at Speed Week and I know he really wanted to be there one more time. He an I had made several trips around the US to see all different kinds of racing over the years and just couldn't ever make it to Bonneville together. Sorry if I hijacked a bit, now back to your regular programming.

I am Scottish/Norwegian. And pale, And a guy that stays out of the sun. I wear lightweight breathable hiking pants. Good/padded trail running shoes and as of last year a UV long sleeve shirt. Couple that with a straw or boonie hat and some spray sunscreen about 3 times a day for the face and ears and I am fine. I also wear my dark polarized Bolle prescription shades. They are normally so dark I can not use them but they are like clear on the salt.

Tman, this discussion of sunburns reminds me of what happens if your the kind of guy that wears cargo shorts WITHOUT underwear.

If you don't apply generous quantities of sunscreen to your private parts (OK "balls") you CAN get a big time burn on the balls! (the salt reflects the sun UP!!)

A number of years ago a fellow (pale skinned) wandered around on the salt for a whole day (without underwear) and got such a serious burn on his balls; that he had to go to a hospital emergency in SLC.

Our local wallyworld had bicycle trailers on clearance sale last week. If you are using bikes, I'd suggest one of those. Enough room for a decent size cooler and supplies. I tried a light backpack last year, and it just kept the heat right against my back!

I have a couple questions that I wonder if someone can help me with. I plan on going to speedweek but I can only make it there 1 day. I am taking my 2 boys (11 and 9) and am wondering how much the passes are so I can plan to bring enough cash. Can you buy a day pass and are kids any cheaper? Also, I can only make it out there on Tuesday. Will the racing still be going strong and is it worth it to go for just 1 day? My Dad took me when I was 8 and I want to give my boys the experience I had of being on the salt.

a lot of people will be leaving Monday. but, plenty of racing going on. wear big hats & Sun block and closed shoes. Take at least a couple of bottles of water for each of you.
also, take lots of pics and post them here.
