I'm super stoked to upgrade my car game. I found this car in Arizona. There is zero rust.

Running 21 stud. Mostly stock car. The wiring freaks me out. It's cloth wiring and a lot of it is frayed. I'll go through that very soon.

Bought this 1950 Mercury 8CM flathead a few weeks ago. Going to build up a 274 cubic inch engine for the ford.

I was very happy to see it indeed had 4" of stroke.

The clutch was slipping pretty bad. Even though the Merc engine will take an 11" clutch, I do want to drive the car in the mean time. So I brought the car to work and swapped in a rebuilt '39 trans with the new clutch.

I'm going to bring the car's height down a little bit. Here's the rear leafs. De-arched Teflon wear pads, and new hardware.

Here's how the car sits now. I'll get the front end down on Monday.

I've got '40 ford backing plates and drums that will be installed next week as well.

The Merc engine is almost all apart and will go to the machine shop this week.

I'll keep this thread updated! Thanks for looking!

Nice score. The 35 and 36 Fords are so cool.

  3. Lucky you! Looks like a great car. Look forward to seeing it with the front end lowered.

Thanks guys! Going to also do the early 40's steel wheel treatment as well.

Yeah. And they don't really articulate after all these years. The rear end travels like ****er right now and the front feels almost rigid.

As far as I can tell, this thing has never left Arizona. Its history is traceable to at least 40 years in and around Tuscon. I love that paint and body work will be much easier than what I dealt with on my '50 ford.

Scored an AM Radio to replace the ash tray.... Now to think of a way to have this work without the bulky unit... At least it's aesthetically more pleasing than the ash tray.

    There. Fixed it with Flickr...

What a pain in the ***.

Anyway. I have 40 Ford steel wheels coming. A little beefier tires, and I'll get those hydraulic brakes on early next week...

I hope to have that merc engine back in a month and get that installed soon after...

I like the 16 inch wire wheels. What color are you going with on the 40 wheels?

    Thanks guys!

I know... I'm just not motivated to run these wires... And the '40 ford wheels have been done, but they're cheap.

I'm not sure what color they'll be yet. But they definitely won't be red.

    Man...

I've been dragging *** on this car. But now I've got the ball rolling pretty fast.

Juice brake conversion done. New pedals ***embly installed. It takes a long time when you try and source everything yourself to save money.

Went to a bar to test out the new juice brakes, wheel/tire, tie rode ends, drag link, etc...

The engine has to come out...

Might as well do this car right. I was considering just running the Merc. engine as the car sits, but I've decided against half ***ing this.

Made some new frame parts to replace the thrashed and twisted members.

The 1950 Merc. engine is rebuilt and done. Clay Smith Cam, slight bore, Bubba's Elec. ignition...

Frame is repainted. Rebuilt the banjo rear with 3:54 gears. This car had 4:11.

Painted the engine and trans 1950 Ford Bronze.

About ready to drop the engine and '39 trans in.

Body and is about to be painted and Interior will get knocked out as well.

Very nice car and great job with the mods.
Is that Long Beach Spring you're doing all that work at? They did lots of new and re-arched springs for me over the years when I lived in San Pedro, glad to see them still around and thriving!

Thanks man! My father owns the place. They're now housed in our facility that builds oilfield equipment(we've had LB Spring for the last 12 years or so). I work here as well. So converting the spring shop into a custom hotrod shop in addition to the custom leaf springs is me trying to add some fun around the shop.

We get a lot of old cars here, but mine is definitely allowing us to stretch our legs.

    Thanks!

Not sure yet. I wasn't aware a wide belt fan wouldn't clear. I've never done this before... If it's a thing, maybe I'll go electric?

I'll definitely burn that bridge when I get there.
