My 700R4 shifts way too early for my taste and for my engine. The TV cable adjustment won't do it for this combination. After doing some research, it appears I need to recalibration my governor. I have searched the HAMB and online and don't find any instructions. None on the B&M site that I could find either.

Before I tear into this project, I seek advice from the knowledge base here on the HAMB. Thanks for your guidance.

BTW, the car is a 54 Chevy with a ZZ3 engine and 3.5 rear end, as best I can tell.

Are you sure about the TV cable adjustment?
How do you have the cable hooked up to the carb?
The B&M governor kit for the 350 and 400 will work on the 700.

Yes. I have a 700R4 in my 86 Silverado. I have it adjusted correctly and it works well. This transmission shifts very quickly and very hard. It's calibrated for a higher rear axle (lower number), I think.

there are 3 different governor weights that were used on 700's.
the lightest were used for V6 applications, the heaviest on diesels.
Find a governor out of an S10 pickup with the lightest weights to make it
    upshift later.

Thankfully, the kit comes with pretty good instructions. I changed my weights to #1 & #2 and got a big improvement. The weights I took out must have been for a diesel engine! I'm still going to experiment some more. The only h***le is putting the cover back on and replacing 2qts. of fluid each time you knock the cover off.

Wow. The Transmission had a pair of C weights in it before I started. It up shifted way before the engine got into its HP rpm. After a bunch of changes, I'm using the 2 and 4 weights with the green and yellow springs respectively. This gives me a 5000 rpm upshift at WOT. It is unbelievable how much this improved the performance.

Tip. Don't knock the governor cover off after the ****** has sit all night. Crank it up for 15-20 seconds so that the fluid fills the torque converter, etc. and you will only lose a couple of ounces of fluid.

Also, only change one thing at a time and write down your combinations and results. As you use the lighter weights, you should also use lighter springs (within reason) with them. Lightest spring with the lightest weight.

    Good luck.
