So that's the reason it takes the parking attendant so long to retrieve my car from parking.

It does look like that is a door they are going though, it doesn't match the window openings. So , maybe it's something they do often due to not having room to have a permanent ramp built out on the street.:)

  5. That may have been here in Spokane. The historic Davenport Hotel used to showcase cars in the upper levels of the hotel. There are some neat pictures from the teens and 20's. They loaded them in the 2nd floor like that. Hard to tell, but that building resembles the Davenport...

We have a winner! Good eyes Chris.

I looked it up. First pic was titled "preparing for lobby auto show 1915"...Note the use of big time block and tackle, guys camped out behind the load (car) and a passenger in the back seat along for the ride-fearless. Looks like it would have been a fun gig to attend.

Cool piece of history. Thanks for the extra pictures. They must have really wanted those cars on the second floor because that looks like a difficult task of getting those up there. What the hell have they mounted the winch to, that is pulling the car up the ramp? I'm assuming it's a winch, and not 12 guys pulling the other end of that rope.

I'd guess that it's a winch which could be spun 180 degrees and also be used to pull the car up the other ramp from the street.
The pull rope could hit a pivot wheel at the "window" ledge and be attached to a truck in the street as a mule, but that wouldn't help the Gents pull the car from the street into the building.

Here's the bigger question; we have entry and exit ramps leading from the ground floor inside the Hotel to the 2nd story, then back down to the street. There's a touring car pictured on display on the ground floor. Were the cars displayed on the 1st and 2nd floors?
If not, the ramps were merely utilized to get the cars from the street to the ground floor inside the building which seems like a heck of a lot more work than cutting an access door in the ground floor wall.

I agree looks like they went up and back down. A simple door would have been quick.
