Are you sure its not a exhaust manifold leak making the ticking noise?

not sure of the cure... but the plug wires need to be NOT touching each other,AND
or NOT leaning on the exhaust pipes...

Only thing I can think of with the new wires is make sure they are pushed on all the way and clipped to the terminals on the cap and the plugs.

Wires are not touching each other except at the cap were they overlap because there's not really any way around that. The closest they come to exhaust is about an inch from the manifold for a two if the wires.

And it's in no way shape or form an exhaust leak. I've got my money on something funny in that cap. I'll keep you all posted.

Ok guys I took it apart and took photos for you all.

Everything, to me the fairly un informed, looks like it should when checking against the diagram above.

I DID find a crack in the cap which you'll see in a bad photo. It's about a half inch long on the drivers side rear hold down housing.

You know the little L shaped spring loaded things.

It seems like its a superficial area so I wouldn't give me this problem. However this morning with it running I pushed down in the cap and pushed a little counter clock wise and it made the noise go away for a moment so it seems plausible.

    What do you think?

Also I twisted the rotor as suggested and it did go back to its start point. I don't know how fast its supposed to "snap" back but it wasn't fast enough for me to call it snapping back, moving back at a steady and not sluggish rate? Sure. Snapping back? No way.

Ok I'm gonna go check some honey do's off the list so we can make the drags Saturday but I'll check back in an hour or so to see what y'all think.

Looks like the lug in your cap at 2 oclock looks odd.you really need to change out that and the rotor.good quality cap and rotor not the cheapies.

Ok so new mad cap and rotor installed and though the engine sounds healthier now the noise isn't gone and now it won't idle. There's no weird miss or anything just let you foot off the gas & it dies.

I took photos of every step in case I messed up. I'll post them in a min

Wire with clear tape on it just to the left of the plug ins is #1

That's the way it's always been as far as I'm aware.

Check your old coil. Could have been damaged in the original debacle with the missing pin in the cap. Consider replacing the ignition module as well.

Ground is missing, goes in the center slot.

Ok swapped the spring/****on etc out for the slightly longer one from MSD. I thought it being for the stock dist that it would be the ****on. Wrong.

The MSD ****on is a good but longer. Anyhow I swapped them and it will idle now, doesn't seem as smooth as before but still getting the arcing sound!

    Felling stumped for sure

Excluding the fact that it may not be idling now, is the dissie shaft bent, causing the ticking. The old cap looks as if some of the posts may be a little worn.
As to now idle, you mentioned twisting the rotor and it but snapping back. Is it now stuck, hopefully helpful.

the contact for the rotor should go in the cap first, then the rubber disc, then the coil. if you put the rubber disc first you are spacing the contact away from the rotor causing it to have to arc from the coil to the rotor. The contact should touch the rotor. The black carbon in the rotor contact area? probably from jumping the arc

Take a look at the original black cap photo and the recessed coil contact. That contact should stick out of the cap further to touch the rotor. That is the reason for the black carbon inside the rotor.

I think you onto something with the rubber going on second instead of first. I won't have time for a few days but when I get time I'll tear into it yet again and see what I find

Perhaps the electrical tapping sound is your coil finding a way to ground at another route as your ground strap is missing.

  26. FOR GOD SAKES MAN, Listen to 54Buick48D he's got the answer to your problem. That little chicken **** sheet metal ground strap is clearly missing from under the coil to the center slot of the distributor cap. Go back to your pictures and look.
What you are hearing is the spark jumping inside the cap to ground.
I've seen this several times over the years.

As said earlier, it seems a short that loud would stumble the motor more than it is. Its very hard to hear where a noise is coming from on a running engine, I always take a plastic hose like off a shop vac and try to pin point the source. Hard to tell from a video (****y speakers) but I had an OT truck give off a simular noise and it turned out to be a piece of carbon bouncing around in the cylinder. Also check the belt for frays and the alternator. Kind of a long shot but......

and that^^^^but the OP stated that it did not start until he changed the wires. Look at his original cap, no ground strap.(no noise) I'm betting the contact location is wrong therefore worn to the point of no contact, hence the arcing. But apparently he installed it like it was removed. I have seen them run fine without the ground terminal, but I would install one.

I need to know what was the outcome I'm on the other side of the globe, in the antipodes, concerned what it could be.
