    Men

Driving me nuts, flathead rebuilt and 3 speed gearbox (******) rebuilt in 32 coupe, all back in but can't get a gear. OK in neutral but when clutch pressed won't let me select a gear (loud grinding noise, not good).

Looking thru' inspection hole I can see the pressure plate moving but not by much.

Question is, how far should the travel on the lever be on the outside of the gearbox, mine moves from 12 o'clock to 11 o'clock, is that enough?

Some folks seem to cut down the lever by 1/4 inch to get more movement, anyone done that?

    Thanks for helping.

PS Pressure plate is 10inch, I know thats not standard but its what came with the car.

Ok lets get this corrected. 1st what is the pedal ***embly and linkage you are using, Second what is the clutch shaft arm that you are using? The issue is with the throw generated by the pedal and the arm.

The best way to examine if you have enough throw in the operation is to examine the relationship of the clutch arm throw to the pedal displacement. Just to trouble shoot the clutch shaft arm(trans side) should be positioned so the arm is about in the 12-1 o clock position, looking at the arm from the driver side. Pushing on the pedal should displace the arm so it points to somewhere in the 11-10 o clock position.

If you review the operation of your clutch throw and it doesnt fall in this range you do not have enough throw engineered in your set up and that is not disengaging the clutch disk completely. This causes the main drive to spin slightly and grind the gears when trying to shift into the lower gear ranges. Tell us what you have for parts and we'll go from there.

Make sure your clutch disc is installed the correct way. If it's in backwards it can
drag on the flywheel and not release.

Gentlemen, what we have is a failure to communicate. You do not have to remove the engine and replace the pressure plate yet. That is a waste of time and effort. If you have used a 10" pressure plate from a 42-48 p***enger car or PU it s the correct part. Since you are still having trouble the problem probably exists around the pedal throw, without knowing what you have used for parts it is impossible to figure out what needs to be addressed.
