My 59 Pontiac´s harmonic vibration damper has it´s rubber part as soft as a rock.
So the outer part of damper just roll around.
Engine of course have some vibrations.
I unbolted the damper and took away the loose outer part.
    Stil vibrations...
New dampers are as easy to find as hens tooth.
Would a newer 400cid pontiac damper fit?
I happened to have one in my carage.
Messing with pulleys and belt lines aint gonna be broblem.

  3. NONSENSE! Who told you that? All Pontiac crank snout diameters 1955-1981 are the same.

pontiac crank is diffrent both in front and rear change is 1963
if you want pic ill take them and timing gear cover is allso diffrent wider on 1963.i have one 1962 389 engine out of a starcheif 1962 and one 389 out of a catalina 1963.
i figure this out putting the 1963 in the 1962 starchief,no one told me.

389 is a 389, biggest change was when they added the ear on the block to mount the starter. The journal diameter is different each year until '59 and the 421 and larger blocks use smaller journals.

I had a 301 front cover installed on a '59 block and it fit fine.

You can try the 400 balancer, it may well work, a 400 is essentially the same as a 389 with a slightly larger bore.
