I have a couple of pedal car bodies. I have a 6 volt Ford starter (I think its a 6 volt. It has a very long shaft.) and a 3.5 hp Te***seh. While I can figure out how to make it work, the part that I can't get my head around is the steering. I really didn't want to buy spindles as heavy as those found on a go cart. Just curious if anyone has any pictures of the steering linkage and spindles used. I'd like to see pictures of motorized pedal cars.
As light as this stuff will be could you not just look at a go-kart set-up and then fab your own? A well-stocked hardware store should have the materials you'd need. Even the spindle wouldn't be too hard to make. Knowing what kind of wheels and the ID of the bearings on them would be important. Mine doesn't have an engine but I like it anyway. JH
man, I've been thinkingof this for a while now. I think using the motor off of a weed whacker like the ones used on the pocket rocket bikes would work great. You get an adjustable clutch to limit how slow or fast it goes, in a compact unit. r
If you lived in CA, and a little Quake hit while on the HAMB you would have a pedal car crashing on your head.
now that my neice is getting older i plan on making her pedal car motorized with the use of the drive train out of a pocket bike. most have electric start headlights and blinkers too.
That actually happened to me when i lived in LA - 'cept the cars were 1/25 scale diecasts. Little SOBs still hurt though. Ahhhhh..... just another advantage to living in the Southeast. JH
I've been thinking along these lines, too. Slide Jr.'s getting a bit bigger, and "needs" to go faster. (Though he has been known to get his pedal car going pretty good... especially downhill! ) Frank, Northern Tool has all kinds of go-kart parts you might be able to use... but that's awful far for you to drive!
Might check your local dump/recycling center/s**** metal place for a riding mower--something small like, say, an eight horse Murray or the like. Hacksaw and welder, narrow it down the middle.
GREAT GUYS..... No I'm going to have to drag up the pedal car I bought years ago and intrsduce it to my daughter that has never seen it..... Do a Tech when you get one built too. I'll need instructions...
I have two T-Bird Jrs. Basically an electric go kart. One is a '55 and one is a '57. Both run off a six volt battery. Both are from the mid fifties. I can shot some PICS next week for you if interested in the ch***is set up.
I never pick through trash but the other day on the way to work someone was throwing away one of those power wheel things. I've got a few bodies and such so I slammed on the brakes and held up traffice while I stuffed that thing in the trunk. It's got perfect parts to hide under a cool body now that I've got it all torn apart. My neice is gonna be the cats ***!
Here is an idea I had after reading your post. I don't know how well it would work, I attached a ****py drawing done in paint just so its easier to visualize. Here goes: attached to the wheel would be a rod, just a few inches long, attached to that at a 90 degree angle would be a rod, a few inches long, with the ability to pivot, attached to that would be a rod that spans from the one i just mentioned, to the other one on the other wheel, in the middle this rod would be threaded, or slotted, the steering wheel attached to a rod perpindicular to the wide rod with slots. the rod from the steering wheel would be slotted at the end, so that as the steering wheel is turned the threads, screw if you will, so the wide rod goes left or right, pushing the rod its attached to, in turn pulling the rod attached to the wheel. Heres the pic. sorry if I lost anyone. and I also do not know how good this would work just an idea I got.
Yeah, I'm being a cheap *** though. I've bought a pair of tiny slicks from there but most of the front wheels I have seen are too bulky. I will end up fabricating my own spindles I guess. The regular gocart ones are just so large and space is limited as it is. I know how I can do it, just hoping to see some pictures of others.
Here is a concept sketch I did over a photo of a buck that my friend and I have started for a gocart for his son. Any ideas for running gear, frame, and steering? Bill
Man, I was home in Buffalo and I friend of my brother's is building one for Speed Bill. It was an original from The Pierce-Arrow building and that thing is going to be awesome. It has a chain driven rear-end that is hooked up to a three speed ******. It's like building a car from the ground up but not being able to drive it. Cool though.
