Some people love this movie, others think it just melodrama. I guess the debate will always go on, but I think Natalie Wood had a couple good points.

 

Now the "Wild One" is on. TCM is going JD tonight.

 

the cars were cool..No comment on the movie..

 

I caught the Buddy Holly story the otehr night. Busey is GREAT, probably his best roll ever.

 

Shame about him, wear your helmets guys.

 

GB recovered fully from the curb encounter, IMO he wuz robbed not getting an Oscar for his sensitive portrayal in the Buddy Holly movie. Holly's late father stood up during a premiere showing in Texas, pointed toward the screen and said "That's my son up there!"

"Rebel Without A Cause" was a movie that was aimed at a teenage audience and was a sign of the times,the 50's,us older guys can empathize with the characters it portrays.

Much like "American Grafitti relates to the early 60's.

Remember James Dean,Natalie Wood and Sal Mineo were the a few of the must have stars during this period of their lives. HRP

 

I'm sure you're right, HRP. Amazingly, as a teenager in the late 70's, some of the angst in this movie still applied.

Last night, I was hanging with a friend and we were telling his son how the tech age has changed teenagers and how they cope with life. Facebook, Twitter and cell phones with cameras have removed a lot of the innocence of being a kid. I recall doing some bonehead stuff and the only witnesses were the few people around at the time. Now a days, a kids every move is subject to be on Facebook or YouTube. They'll never know what they missed.

 

Kind of sad how as kids we would strive so hard to lose our innocents, only to have such fond memories of it when we get older. I try to tell my son how important it is to preserve his daughters innocents as long as he can, it's the one thing in our lives we can never return to. Kids today are caught in the draft of technology like a leaf behind a speeding semi, and they're missing a lot of the scenery along the way. Sorry, about the public ramble, damned technology.

And people wonder how come I don't have Twitter or Facebook account. I can't understand the popularity of that ****.

 

My nephew speaks three languages,self taught Japanese and spanish. Spends ALL his waking hours on the computer...NO drivers license,NO job,NO clue on what's going on in the outside world. Genius IQ also! Life is just p***ing him by....
If there would have been the social media back then,like there is now,there would be 100's of pic's of Deans crash...

 

As the world reads his post on their laptops, tablets and cell phones!

Well said, well said. I agree but it was us boomers that got the ball rolling, going against the establishment, against our parents (the greatest generation) way of life. The boomers opened Pandora's Box.

 

Lately the past 2 years that I've been to Paso, I've went up the 5 to the 46,made a stop at Blackwells corner (there's a huge image of JD outside). The intersection of 46/41 looks the same but 46 is being expanded from a 2 lane to a 4 land highway betwween Paso and the 5 fwy. It's being done in sections and it's sad because it's like the road is losing it's character, it's personality. It's looking more like a freeway and the 46/41 intersection will no longer be the same (and that's if they haven't already changed it).

 

NO NO! Not saying that would be good at all. Just the opposite! We live in a "Big Brother" world now. Many events of the past would be seen differently today.
I love that movie! Watch it everytime it's on.

 

The original intersection (as in the photo) has not been there for many years. I've been there several times in the 1950's and 1960's. The last time I was there was Sept. 30, 2005, for the "50 year celebration" and the intersection of the two CA highways was changed pretty drastically from the original in the photos.

A side note: If this accident had happened today, the driver of the Ford (Donald Turnupseed) would most likely have been arrested for manslaughter, as he made a left turn directly in front of Dean's Porsche.

Are any HAMBers going to the James Dean Run in Fairmount, IN during the latter part of September? If you're going in your hot rod you'll want to register and show it in the park...if you're going just as a spectator and won't be going into the park, you can park at our house without cost. We live less than 2 blocks from the park and it's easy to stroll in. Parking is always an issue, so let me know you're coming.
