We're running a speedway(?) adaptor behind a late model flathead to a muncie 4 spd, it usues a ford throwout bearing with a stock style two finger fork. The throwout bearing ocaisionally hangs up on the end of the snout sleeve and it caused much grief at speedweek, eventually forcing us to shift without the clutch. Also, the pilot bushing adaptor came out in two pieces and with some careful measurement, it seems the snout engagement (5/16") may not be ideal... On top of all this, it appears that the clutch may still be slipping at high RPM.... Apparently we're not the only ones as Gene Winfield was experiencing a similar problem with his coupe this year. This is my first foray into using anything other than OE transmissions behind a flathead. Is there a different arrangement/adaptor that will simplify the installation of this trans behind this engine? Something with an upgraded racing style diaphragm clutch maybe? I'm wondering why bother using the ford style bearing/fork/three finger pressure plate/etc... probably works fine for a street car, but it seems like a bunch of rube goldberg bs for a racing application... thanks!
I redrilled a Chev Lakewood ****ter shield to fit the 8ba block, used a Chev aluminum flywheel, diaphragm clutch, gear drive starter and Richmond 5 speed trans. There was some minor machine work involved. Any Chev transmission could be used.
Bendtson makes a adapter to fit what ever you want .... Good guy to deal with and does some super work........ http://www.transmissionadapters.com/
I had a HUGE F'n headache with a F/H T 5 conversion in my F1. Using a Speedway adapter , In my case the input shaft had to be shortened by about 1/2 in. The snag i've been running into seems to stem somewhere in the way the fork aligns with the t/out bearing. My keeps jamming so nothing seems to work On top of that there is no "window' between the bellhousing & the Speedway adapter'. I had flywheel redrilled for a 10.5 Press/plate, 10 in clutch with 14 spline etc I've been F'n with it for a month and the trans is getting harder to put in pull/ out Talk to Gary at Cornhuskers a good guy, best of luck
"...In my case the input shaft had to be shortened by about 1/2 in." I'm pretty sure Speedway sells (I know Offehauser does) two different adapters, one of which is about a 1/2" shorter to be used along with a second adapter plate such as for an Olds. You might have gotten the shorter one by mistake, so had to shorten your input shaft to make up for it. The shorter adapter might be causing some of your other issues.
