Hello all- Just a quick question for opinions. I am putting plans to paper for my '54 Linoln Capri and I want to put a dual exhaust of her but now sure about mufflers. I read a lot about Smitty's but really don't know much about them. Same with Lake pipes etc.....the car will be a very mild custom when I am done and the motor will get as beefed up as I can make it so what are your opinions? Any options I may have left out? I know I can go Flowmaster but I was looking to do something a little more old school in keeping with the year of my car.....thanks
You could always do the tried and true "old school" hollowed out gl*** packs. That would keep you with the exhaust tech from the late 50's and 60's. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
OK...going to look into gl***packs...dumb question maybe but....don't both Cherry Bomb and Thrush make gl*** packs and do they hook right into the duals without issue. I'm thinking 2.5 pipes headed to the rear but again, I have done this on more "modern" street rod types but now I have converted to old school. Just wondering about older compression, motor etc...and how th pipe diameter and mufflers may cause the motor to react. I have a 317 which seems factory at the moment.
Have to agree with 2racer on the pipe. 2" is perfect provides proper back pressure. Dont worry about going larger unless the motor gets some work done that warrants the increased flow Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Use 2" stock pipes with Brockman Mellowtone mufflers. The new Smittys aren't the same as the original ones. I found a set of NOS ones back in the 80's I run on my Olds, they sound great. Brock's are the only ones I run nowadays. He'll make them in gl***, steel or no packing for you, any length you want.
Thankx guys was wondering about the 2.5 on this motor. I will stick to the 2 inch and check out all the suggested mufflers.
If your lookin for rumble, 2.5.... I run bigger for less back pressure and better MPG and performance....
on my 54 im running 1 3/4 duals with no mufflers, but i have a set of smittys to put on. a couple of things to take into consideration. figure out your routing for the exhaust, and that might make a difference on the size of pipes to run, and what size mufflers to use. its a tight squeeze under the car past the ****** because of the shape of the frame, one of my pipes goes through the frame, and the other one hugs the transmission, and figure out where you can mount your mufflers too before you commit to a type, some of the longer ones wont fit.
